Holi at Trishna

February 29, 2012

Did you know that's it the Hindu Spring Festival of Holi next week?

Well if you didn't, Head Chef Karam Sethi of Trishna, the Marylebone village restaurant which specialises in the coastal cuisine of South West India, is welcoming you into its festival-going arms.

Between 5th - 11th March, Karam will be celebrating Holi, or in other words, 'the coming of Spring' (traditionally, Indians celebrate the special day by throwing powdered pigment and coloured water at each other and making a beautiful kaleidoscopic mess in public places), by installing a tasting menu for all his customers.

There will be 4 or 6 courses up for grabs. How does crab and pollack tikkas with curry leaf, mustard seed and crab chutney or lamb chop with Kashmiri chilli, ginger and mustard mooli sound to you?

Priced at £35.50 for four courses (or £64 including wine pairings). The six course menu will be £45.50 (£88 with wine).

15 - 17 Blandford Street, W1U 3DG

Gone Fishing

February 29, 2012

Sushi is big business in Brazil and to prove it, launching in March on Lexington Street, is Yoobi, London’s first Brazilian inspired temakeria serving freshly made temaki rolls using high quality natural ingredients from its own rice blend to sustainably-sourced fish and fresh wasabi to locally sourced vegetables. Leading up to the opening, Yoobi is inviting the good people of Soho to play a little game with the chance to win free temaki. The Yoobi site is currently concealed behind a brightly coloured hoarding that hosts a school of black fish, each bearing its own QR code. Just scan them with your smartphone to see if you’ve landed a whopper. The QR technology means that the messages behind the codes can change so the same fish might be unlucky one day but a winner the next! Vouchers can be redeemed at Yoobi within the first two weeks of opening. Happy fishing!

Truffles in Babylon

February 28, 2012

If you gave up chocolate for lent and are struggling - would it be sensible to give you something else to look forward to in the meantime?

Probably not, but here you go anyway. Head to Babylon at the end of April and you may just find yourself needing to give Truffles up for next year's lent.

The eponymous Kensington Roof Garden Restaurant is launching its very own Truffle Menu that week .... running for both lunch and dinner. It will be priced at £55.

Be prepared for the famous hidden 'mushroom' to be ensconced into just about every course delivered to the table ... You certainly won't be going home hungry.

Truffle Menu begins on 30th April.

People’s Pop-up

February 28, 2012

The pioneering The People’s Supermarket, the shop run by the people and for the people, is becoming the hub of events for Fairtrade Fortnight including the opening of its own pop-up Fairtrade restaurant. For one night only, the shelves will be pushed aside and a three-course Fairtrade feast served in style – created of course using ingredients that have been produced under decent conditions and traded for a fair price. The events, each themed to raise awareness of producers in the developing world,  include Fairtrade chocolate-making workshops, wine-tasting with guest sommelier Christophe Charbonnet and cinema screenings, showing some of the world’s best documentaries on Fairtrade including the award-winning Black Gold. The pop-up restaurant takes place on 9 March and the fortnight’s finale is a Lamb’s Conduit Street farmers’ market featuring producers from Palestine, Ghana, Malawi and beyond. Go to www.thepeoplessupermarket.org for tickets.

London Fashion Week may be done and dusted for another season but The May Fair Hotel isn’t ready to hang up its stilettos quite yet. It’s joined forces with the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt and guest of honour is Queen of Prints, Mary Katrantzou’s Teflon Egg – in residency for 40 days and 40 nights. Katrantzou’s show was one of the hottest tickets of London Fashion Week  and her Topshop collection too has been an absolute sell-out. Her vibrant three-colour tiered egg is adorned with an army of tiny metal flowers, Swarovski crystals, bells and whistles and described as “Man Meets Machine Meets Mother Earth.” The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt aims to raise vital funds and awareness for charities Action for Children and Elephant Family while celebrating the most exciting and inspired artistic talent from around the globe. In addition, participants of The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt will have the chance of winning the world’s most extraordinary prize: The Fabergé Tribute Egg valued at over £100,000.

Since last Friday designers, models, bloggers, fashionistas and rock stars have swept the streets in one svelt sweep. One could certainly be forgiven for forgetting that a world outside Burberry, Victoria Beckham’s eye bags and 'the' Mary Katrantzou Topshop dress exists.

Nevertheless, with February's fashion frenzy and the big freeze finally over, sunnier skies and Spring offer a great chance to get reenergised with new ideas. So if you want some fresh inspiration, then put The 'WIE' Symposium (‘Women Inspiration and Enterprise') in your diary. WIE Symposium is the brainchild of June Sarpong (former T4 presenter) and Dee Poku, created to motivate and educate women by hosting key women speakers from the worlds of business, politics, fashion and entertainment to lead a series of panels and workshops.

WIE Symposium launched in New York last year and talks from Donna Karen, Nancy Pelosi, Queen Rania of Jordan and Christy Turlington were a huge hit. This year, WIE Symposium will take place in London on International Women’s Day, Thursday 8th March with some equally compelling talks from Jo Malone, Jo Elvin, Kathy Lette, Lynn de Rothschild, Lynne Franks and Julie Meyer amongst others. The talks will include; Tools for the Entrepreneur, Women and Leadership, Women in Media, The Luxury Industry and Financial Tools for Success. The day will also launch the WIE Mentorship Scheme – a program designed to provide long term support and advice from leading businesswomen to young women about to embark on their careers.

The event will take place at The Hospital Club in London and tickets are available at www.wienetwork.org at £150.00 per person.

If you want to get inspired, WIE is your chance.

The Grosvenor Hotel has marked the completion of its 18-month renovation with the opening of a brand new suite, which, in a humorous twist, is dedicated to a guest that didn’t even make it through the door! The Courtesan’s Boudoir - The Cora Pearl Suite celebrates the day in 1870 when the Parisian courtesan was actually turned away from the hotel. She’d booked into a suite but was refused entry when stories of her hedonistic lifestyle (and the rest) surfaced. The Grosvenor's new luxurious rococo-themed suite draws its inspiration from the French interiors of the late 1800s and features glass chandeliers, feather trimmed lamps, damask wallpaper and silver finished French inspired furniture. There’s even a free-standing infinity bath (Ilike an infinity pool ubut a tad smaller) elevated on a marble tile plinth – a replica of the bronze bath that Cora famously filled with vintage Champagne in which to bathe with her suitors. It is unlikely you can book this suite by the hour...

Two night Cora Pearl package, £1,862 with champagne on arrival, a personal butler on call throughout (briefed to draw you a rose petal bath after dinner), cocktails, a seven course meal at Grand Imperial with a choice of matching wines and breakfasts of strawberries and Champagne.

Bon Bon at Volupte

February 23, 2012

We've all heard of Volupté: London's number one burlesque bar, where cocktails don't come with a side order of nuts, but rather, of cabaret.

But change is afoot at this subterranean marvel, for it has launched The Bon Bon Bar, a sweet-shop-cum-speakeasy.

Behind a velvet curtain, The Bon Bon Bar will await guests with a pretty array of jam jars filled to their brim of tantalising retro sweets.

But if you that doesn't quite tickle your fancy enough, why not try some of their cocktails? Among the selection are, ‘Miss Marshmallow’, a raspberry and vanilla vodka concoction, topped with a marshmallow...... or the ‘Candy Cane’, created with Koko Kanu, Blue Curaçao, Lichi Li Liqueur and gin.. and of course, accompanied by a candy cane.

There are shots and Champagne-based cocktails, too.

What's not to like? London's new underground secret. Just don't tell the dentist about it ...
