Rouge Coco

March 8, 2012

Chanel has done it again.  Peter Phillips, the creative director of Chanel make up, has created a Spring line full of soft pinks, light corals and pure colours, to show a perfect reflection of the new Season.  Every piece of the new collection is adorned with a seductive glamour and subtlety that makes it impossible not to be tempted by all of it.

Their Rouge Coco lipstick range offers an extensive use of colours, from orange corals to pale pinks or the beautifully alluring plum, and their elegant and flattering shades mean you are able to wear them throughout the day, and into the evening.   As always, the lipsticks are available with a slightly shinier texture, depending on your mood.  In addition, Chanel have brought out a must have for the Spring season, a simple crayon for the outer lips, which transforms even the most un-puckered pout to beautifully full lips.

From their translucent powders, which help to neutralize your face leaving it both flawless and radiant, to their extraordinary monochrome blush, or their eye shadow which leaves a virtually imperceptible but undeniably flattering shade of peach across the eyelids, the complete range is nothing short of perfect and instantly makes you feel that Spring has arrived.  Their collection has come at just the right time to help remove any hint of weariness left over from the Winter months, getting you ready for the approaching Summer.

Although many actors might nominate its Red Carpet Facials for the Special Effects category, Natura Bissé is not in line for a BAFTA itself – however, in the run up to Sunday’s ceremony, it’s hosting an exclusive BAFTA suite at The Sanderson Hotel’s Agua Spa to beautify attending celebs and VIPs. Bissé’s Diamond Iced Crystal Facial will be performed from the 99.995% pure air confines of a unique Natura Bissé BUBBLE which serves to maximise the effects of the treatment - not to mention a range of auxiliary actions from hastening physical recovery to improving concentration. Tennis ace Rafael Nadal is such a fan that he actually owns two – one of which he uses to exercise in!

But back to the facial itself which I trialled a couple of weeks ago. It promotes both inner calm and outer radiance: ice cold gem crystals are placed on the chakra points of the face in conjunction with targeted massage and followed by a c. 20% glycolic acid preparation and the application of a masque formulated with diamond dust. Even though the acid is high impact, there’s no risk of dark-glasses-large-hatted downtime as it only remains active for a limited period so you can absolutely go from spa to party. However the effects intensify with time and it was actually over the course of the following few days that I really noticed an increase in radiance. Natura Bissé is a below-the-radar luxury brand with a cult following and a product line and treatment menu that are truly phenomenal.

Unfortunately civilians can’t experience it (yet) from within the BUBBLE - that's off on a world tour - but the Natura Bissé Diamond Experience facial, 90mins, £180, is available at Agua Spa.

Happy New Year of the dragon

January 25, 2012

Welcome to the year of the dragon – in Chinese astrology one promising powerful therapeutic waves of change and wisdom combined with a deeper level of collective understanding. So in the spirit of acquiring some extra wisdom and shifting some cellulite I checked out Marylebone’s brilliant Chi-Yu spa. My therapy of choice was the Deep Tissue & Remedial Massage with the amazing Noriko which promised to help release muscle tensions and stimulate blood circulation and her slow deep pressure strokes using juniper and geranium oils were massage music to some shamefully sedentary gluts. The spa’s holistic approach means they can devise you an integrated experience combining aromatherapy, reflexology, craniosacral therapy and even astrology courtesy of in-house expert, Jo Russell but even if you’re not into the more esoteric side of things I can safely say that results were felt, which, having been the recipient of many not so brilliant massages, is not at all a given.  Small but perfectly formed: this place is a real find. Just try not to tell too many people… Deep Tissue & Remedial Massage, from £45 for 30mins Chi Yu Wellness Centre, 36 George Street, W1 www.chi-yu.co.uk

C-Side Spa at Cowley Manor

December 12, 2011

It's little surprise that Cowley Manor has just been awarded 'Best Spa in a UK Hotel' for the C-Side Spa.  The newly refurbished spa has both an indoor and outdoor pool, a gym, mani-pedi area and four treatment rooms: and it's in the treatment rooms that the magic really happens.

C-Side use their own skincare range, Green and Spring, and the products are gentle enough to soothe even the most sensitive skin types.   The main treatments at C-Side are massages, facials and wraps, although for extra indulgence there are also signature treatments, which include a medley of restoring and beneficial therapies.

Upon entering their treatment room you are given a selection of relaxing playlists to choose from, and once you lie down, melting into the warm, soft bed, you know you are completely in their hands for the next hour. The facials are wonderfully catered to each individual skin and by using a combination of deep scrubs and reviving face masks, the therapists expertly send you off into deep relaxation.  Whilst your mask is left for 10 or so minutes an option of a foot or neck massage is offered, letting you drift yet further into a contended slumber.  Afterwards the therapist will use an intense and nourishing moisturizer which sinks into your face, restoring youth and vitality.

The facial is a very gentle, relaxing, detoxifying and cleansing treatment, which doesn't involve any of the uncomfortable extractions or peels that other facials involve.  It seems to concentrate more on your wellbeing and afterwards you feel like you've had 8 hours sleep.  This is an ideal way to completely unwind while at the same time putting some goodness back into your skin.

A perfect way to spend a wintery afternoon in The Cotswolds.

Gleneagles Spa

September 5, 2011

Set in 850 acres of dramatic Scottish countryside, with one of the most coveted golf courses and home to Andrew Fairlie's 2 Michelin star restaurant, Gleneagles really has it all and that's before you've mentioned the multi award-winning spa...

As soon as you enter the spa you know you are in good hands.  Upon arriving you feel like you have dipped into a sanctuary situated in the beautiful Perthshire hills.  With a selection of rooms in which to unwind, either naturally lit courtyards with plants and calming water or darker relaxation rooms with beds, blankets, magazines and a selection of healthy food and teas, they are the perfect pre or post treatment places to rest, taking you a world away from the busy pace of London.

With heat experiences from their saunas and crystal steam rooms, the vitality  pool which has massage pumps and jets, and their tropical showers, the spa has a great selection of powerful equipment to stimulate the circulation, cleanse, and prepare the body for treatment.

I had the Holistic total body ritual with hot stones, which lasts two hours.  It is impossible not to fall into a deep sleep during this as you are so relaxed.  This treatment includes everything, from a foot massage and scrub to begin with, right through to a facial, body scrub and ending with a hot stone massage.  The treatment is very much about awakening your senses and at the beginning you choose which signature ESPA oils you are drawn to.

After your foot scrub and foot massage you then lie down for the rest of the treatment.  To start with your whole body is buffed and then there is an express facial, incorporating masks and deep moisturizing oils.  This is followed by a quick shower and then your therapist begins the hot stone massage, working into each aching muscle and loosening any tension.   Despite it being two hours the whole treatment is over far too quickly and you are left without a care in the world.

The staff at Gleneagles spa couldn't be more accommodating, attentive or skilled and the treatment list even has a selection of ESPA treatments for Men, so the hotel is a perfect weekend escape for everyone.

Man in Black

November 15, 2010

Even though he was a man of few words, Paul Newman in his prime would have made a good spokesperson for men's grooming brand Jack Black, whose authentic, effective, and handsomely packaged products for the guy's guy don't need much selling.  The latest addition to their line is a rugged fragrance that evokes the ideal American man - an effortlessly attractive, cool, and deeply masculine bloke whose taste isn't swayed by trends.  "I wanted it to be utterly unique - nothing mass or predictable - and to bring the man of today to life through scent," said perfume savant Jerome Epinette of Robertet, the world-renowned fragrance house with whom JB collaborated on their new creation. The scent builds on Jack Black's credo that a grooming routine should be fuss-free and familiar, with subtly exotic components that excite but don't overwhelm.

"I was inspired by the botanicals from Jack Black's rich grooming heritage," Epinette explained, like crisp Tangerine, Eucalyptus, and spicy Black Pepper.  These notes are layered against more robust and mysterious elements of Smokey Papyrus and Black Amber for a perfect blend of comfort and complexity (think zesty orange peels burning atop a wood-fired furnace.)

Hurry to Murdock's for a bottle, and take a whiff of the Beard Lube from Jack Black's Performance Remedy line while you're at it.

La Residencia

September 20, 2010

Set against panoramic views of the Tramuntana mountains and blue skies, La Residencia is located in the medieval, idyllic, coastal village of Deia.  With breathtaking sights of mountains and sea which stretch for miles, it's little wonder that this village has become home to many writers and artists.

Converted from two manor houses, La Residencia has managed to encapsulate the natural and organic surroundings of the village, by using only local art work on their walls, growing their own olive oil and fruit and therefore maintaining the historic charm of Deia; while at the same time synthesising this with an effortless efficiency and elegance needed in a leading hotel.

The surroundings can't help but transport you into a peaceful mindset, but for the really stressed, La Residencia has a spa which has been voted as one of the four best spas in Europe.

Using many of their home-grown products from their local olive and citrus trees, La Residencia's signature treatment is the 'Citrus Siesta.' The treatment begins with a gentle oil body scrub.  The natural oil grains gently exfoliate the skin and the oil that they've grown is so subtle in aroma that there is only a slight scent to it.  Once your whole body has been gently buffed you are asked to take a shower, using home-grown olive oil soaps and a loafer to remove any excess grains.  The texture and smoothness of your skin show the immediate effects of the oil grains.  Afterwards, you lie back down to experience a 'Zen massage' with lemon and almond oil.  Although, the Zen massage means it is a very light pressure, it gives you instant relaxation.  Your skin afterwards is like silk and it's the perfect way to either begin or end your holiday.

There's plenty more to choose from from their 'pure indulgence' menu selection and each are as enticing as the next, there's no surprise why successful musicians, chefs, politicians and businessman are frequenting this hotel each year.

Citrus Siesta lasts 60 mins for 120 euros

With Summer on its way, we can throw away those thick winter creams, and say hello to a summer glow. Now I have tried practically every skin cream under the roof to try and get rid of dry facial skin, either the cream is too thick and and makes skin look dull, or it's too light and does not quite do the trick.  Nothing seemed to work until a friend of mine suggested I tried the Lubatti Skincare Collection which is an exclusive and timeless range of luxury skincare products that have stood the test of time.

The products were inspired and developed using secret recipes, which date back as far as the late 1920s and have been brought to life by Tracey Malone.  These recipes originally belonged to Madame Lubatti, who was a doyenne of her time, a homeopath and a respected skincare expert who hand-mixed skincare products for society ladies and English royalty.  The great thing about the cream is that the ingredients in them are very natural and nourishing for the skin, the lubatti day cream for example, contains all of those really natural ingredients such as aloe vera, and evening primrose oil.  In previous desperate attempts for great skin, I have even tried applying evening primrose oil from a health food shop directly to my skin, but I ended up smelling of raw egg and my face looked so oily that one could practically fry an egg on it! however Lubatti cleverly blends all of the ingredients together to give you the benefits of the oils, with a beautiful spell, and a youthful glow.

We live in a time where nothing stays new for long. Indeed, 'our day', is characterised by a people fixated upon up-dating things and themselves. Modern mantra is 'out with the old, in with the new', i.e. Bye-bye Arlene Phillips, hello Alesha Dixon. Bin book, get ipad etc. Everyone wants to be a 'newer', more 'improved' version of themselves. To keep up to speed, you must have the latest techno gadget or cosmetic procedure and it can be exhausting trying to keep up.

It is a wonder, then, that Elizabeth Arden's legendary Eight Hour Cream is still a firm favourite in these fickle times. It's been 100 years since it first hit the shelves and since then, the ingredients have remained the same. Yes the s-a-m-e.

The astonishing achievement is being celebrated with an anniversary set containing the world-famous Eight Hour Cream and two limited edition Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant pots. But if all this 'old' talk is bewildering you modern day-military-trend-troops, then here's a nugget of newness for you. The Eight Hour Cream is now available as a NEW sun cream with SPF 50. It's got all the genius of the Eight Hour Cream and the SPF will keep you looking YOUNGER for longer.

So there you have it, old and young co-existing happily together. It's surely one for the books (or should I say ipad?)

Pacifica in Hampstead

April 27, 2010

It's not often you find somewhere which manages to tick every box but Pacifica Day Spa seems to do no wrong and their recently launched Hampstead branch is testament to this. The well-situated salon is brimming with delighted customers who shower Kathleen Granados, the owner, with words of praise and gratitude when leaving, so much so I am keen to begin to my treatment as soon as possible to find out what all the fuss is about.

Their 'Yummy Mummy' treatment includes the signature facial and a manicure or pedicure. Lasting just over an hour, it's the ultimate treat for tired or stressed mothers, or just the tired and stressed. Granados begins with the manicure or pedicure where feet are soaked, buffed and painted and then left to dry while you are moved to the facial room. Granados' success lies in her ability to be in tune with all types of skin, which explains her high profile client list. She knows exactly what her clients need; switching cleansers or tools to work on every face accurately and with precision. Granados and her highly trained therapist have learnt to manoeuvre facials to suit the type of skin they are dealing with, resulting in a string of happy and flawless faces leaving their salon.

Pacifica always leaves you wanting more and their reasonable prices mean that you will inevitably go back regularly. This coming bank holiday I couldn't recommend more highly a trip to Pacifica for one of their luxurious treatments. Guaranteed to set you in your stride for the following week.
