From the horses mouth

So if all those florally inspired afternoon teas are making you weep – quite literally if you have hay fever - help is at hand from the cunning folk at W London Hotel. Let us present the Afternoon Rock Tea. Yes they’re bringing rock ‘n’ roll back to Leicester Square with an afternoon tea celebrating the rich musical heritage of  Soho. W’s Rock Tea is served on a three-tier stand made of original vinyl records while elements of the menu are named after iconic rock albums and songs including Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, London’s Burning by The Clash, the Rolling Stone’s Sticky Fingers, Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion, Jimi Hendrick’s Purple Haze, Cherrybomb by The Runaways and a dessert selection inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way. http://www.wlondon.co.uk/

Today sees the launch of a brand new commission by Manifold Editions: Marc Quinn Sphinx, two intricately detailed silkscreen prints, in gold and silver leaf, of the artist’s well-known sculpture of supermodel Kate Moss - her limbs contorted in an extreme yoga pose! “She is a contemporary version of the Sphinx, a mystery,” says the artist of La Moss. “There must be something about her that has clicked with the collective unconscious to make her so ubiquitous, so spirit of the age.” The new contemporary online gallery and art publisher will show the prints as part of their first public exhibition at Front Room in St Martins Lane alongside further brand-new prints by Quinn and Damien Hirst and others by Gary Hume, Elizabeth Magill and 2011 Turner Prize nominee George Shaw.

The images of Moss, from £960, will be exclusively available to buy for one day only at Front Room on 10 May and thereafter online from Manifold Editions.

Exhibition runs 10– 27 May, Monday-Friday, 11am-7pm and noon – 6pm Saturday and Sunday, at the Front Room, St Martins Lane, 45 St Martin’s Lane WC2. www.manifoldeditions.com

Edible Cinema

May 9, 2012

Soho House Group is launching a new series of happenings at The Electric Cinema in Notting Hill wth an integrated tasting experience on Sunday 13 May. Edible Cinema is a collaboration with event organiser Polly Betton and experimental food designer Andrew Stellitano. Following a Bombay Sapphire Pan’s Labyrinth cocktail on arrival, the audience will be provided with a series of numbered ‘packages’ before the start of the film, Pan’s Labyrinth, which contain various foods. Then at specific points during the movie, large placards with corresponding numbers will be shown instructing them to consume the contents to heighten their sensory experience. Edible experiences will include smoked pine popcorn while sniffing a pine-scented handkerchief as Ofelia and Carmen travel through the Spanish woodland onscreen. And then at the moment when Ofelia eats an enchanted grape, they’ll enjoy a specially created carbonated red grape to concentrate and intensify the fruit’s sweet flavour. Mmmm.

Following the sell-out success of the first round last year in the Old Vic Tunnels, Kofler & Kompanie’s Pret a Diner is back. The new instalment of the temporary restaurant sensation named Italians do it Better, is taking place from 9 May to 30 June at 50 St James’s Street. It is spearheaded by Michelin-starred chef Giorgio Locatelli who has selected five other Michelin starred chefs (Accursio Craparo, Cristian and Manuel Costardi, Norbert Niederkofler and Viviana Varese) and challenged them to create fresh innovative style dishes marrying Italian cuisine old and new. 50 St James boasts a grand sweeping marble staircase and impressive high ceilings and the residency will mark a final fling for the decadent Grade II listed building before it closes for a full transformation. In addition to the pop-up restaurant, Pret a Diner will also operate a cocktail bar from 69 Colebrooke Row, a boutique overseen by Pret a Diner creative director Olivia Steele and an art gallery in collaboration with Gazelli Art House showing a cutting-edge exhibition of contemporary Italian artists.

Rioja Capital

May 4, 2012

Now that we are all, to some degree, food and wine connoisseurs, is there anything better than a perfectly cooked dinner with expertly chosen wine pairings?

Even better if said wine pairings are Rioja. On Monday, 21st May, the Spanish favourite is taking pride of place at the Capital Hotel restaurant, located in the heart of Knightsbridge. The four course meal will be accompanied by some of the finest bottles from the Bodegas Roda vineyard, introduced by winemaker and oenologue Gonzalo Lainez. Gonzalo will be hosting the club table, to share the experience with fellow food and wine fans, and to discuss tasting notes!

The Capital's sister food hotspot, Le Metro Wine Bar and Bistro, will also be getting into the party spirit with a Spanish theme taking over the kitchens for the week commencing 21 May. Think tapas-style servings of chorizo, gazpacho and tortilla, accompanied by a Rioja available at only £22 a bottle. The climate may be a little off this May, but it's time to sit back, relax and soak up a more Spanish way of living in SW1.

For more information on the Capital Hotel and its restaurants, see www.capitalhotel.co.uk or contact Caroline Warwick on 020 7722 5466

Silence is golden at cabaret supperclub Volupté with an all-new season of silent movies. The series begins 6 May with a launch party complete with a DJ on the decks, shots at the bar and flapper dresses on the floor transporting film fans back to a bygone era of glitz and glamour. Then every first Sunday of the month at 7pm the downstairs Cabaret Salon will be transformed into an old-world theatre with a pianist tinkling the ivories as guests are seated by dickie-bow-wearing usherettes. First up is Piccadilly this Sunday with 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea on 1 June. Snack on sweet-and-salty popcorn and pick ‘n’ mix sweets from The Bon Bon Bar upstairs or mini burgers and hotdogs while a vintage cocktail list comes packed with pre-prohibition poisons created especially for Cine Illuminé soirées.  Tickets £7 in advance, £8 on the door or £10 per person for a table.

Mr Parsons Bar

April 26, 2012

This week there’s a new bar is opening in Parson’s Green. Step through Mr Parson’s ancient wooden doors and into his living room - a brooding mix of rare, vintage William Morris fabrics, Vivienne Westwood wallpaper and unique items he has collected on his travels. Oh yes and there’s also a portrait of Made in Chelsea’s Francis Boulle. You couldn’t make it up. But if that doesn’t grab you, you’re sure to love the extensive wine list and exciting boutique spirit cocktails from Old School to Nouveaux. Mr Parsons’ handpicked staff (Jack Wills but better looking we hear) are ready to advise you on your ‘Tuesday’ wine or tickle your taste buds with a uniquely named cocktail such as the ‘Mr Wallace’ – it’s named after Mr P’s tailor – who else?!
