Afternoon tea, with sandwiches and tarts on a white tray and cakes around it

The sweet toothed in London must be praising Roald Dahl right now for having written Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, since its new musical adaptation has triggered a flurry of inspired puddings, menus and afternoon teas, including the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tea at One Aldwych in the heart of London.

Reflecting the wit of Roald Dahl and no doubt Charlie’s wonder at the factory, the chefs have come up with a playful menu, that has been described as scrumdiddlyumptious and we agree.

Choose from a range of teas, including Smooth Caramel and Midsummer Mango, or if you a feeling a little bit adventurous the Cocktail Charlie made from Dalmore whisky, Grand Marnier Cherry, chocolate bitters, grapefruit juice, cherry syrup and champagne.

The tea starts with sandwiches, a heritage tomato tart and leek and stilton quiche, before traditional scones served with summer berry jam and apple and meadowsweet compote.  And then it is the turn of the fabulous cakes, decadent golden eggs with vanilla cheesecake and mango, bottles of chocolate caramel milk, light homemade candy floss, blueberry brioche, coco bean financier and classic Eton mess.

We suggest after the tea going to see the musical, well it would be wrong not to, especially as One Aldwych are offering a package combining the two!
