Café Royal

A very fashionable launch Stephanie Hirschmiller Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Only the Café Royal could score a three day pre-launch party as a private Miu Miu club. The entire fashion pack (Kate Moss, Katie Grand, Lulu Kennedy, Giles Deacon, Georgia May Jagger et al) flocked to the embryo venue for three stellar days and nights at the end of November to experience The Miu Miu London. Invitations came in a mini Miu Miu style clutch which included the club rules (#3 Start a conversation with a stranger and #7 Stay longer than you planned and then come back tomorrow. Oh yes and an addendum advised that said rules were also made to be broken). There was a club lounge and smoking terrace, a shop showcasing an exclusive preview of SS13 plus collaborations with Vivienne Westwood and Stephen Jones and a conversation room hosting symposia and screenings. Oh yes and lunch and dinner were cooked by Andrew Turner, April Bloomfield and Margot Henderson.

And then, depressingly, it was gone. But the upside is that The Café Royal, has just relaunched in its place - appropriately, it's always been the preferred haunt of fashionable literati - Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Winston Churchill and Muhammad Ali – all of whom have been patrons over its 150 year history.

Over the past four years, David Chipperfield Architects has restored and transformed the old grandeur into a contemporary, London hotel featuring 159 rooms and historic suites, an array of dining venues, a private members club, high-tech meeting rooms and a wellbeing spa and gym with 18 metre pool.

Interiors seamlessly weave the old with the new and the historic rooms including the legendary Grill and Domino rooms have been sensitively restored by Donald Insall Associates to sit alongside the contemporary spaces with their lightly fumed oak floors and delicate copperlight doors. Each room is filled with natural light and the suites in particular boast spectacular views of the capital.

Café Royal is the second member of The Set – Alfred and Georgi Akirov’s visionary new contemporary hotel collection currently comprising Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam with Hotel Lutetia coming soon to Paris.
