Hippodrome Casino

Vegas comes to London Stephanie Hirschmiller Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Next spring London is getting a Vegas style make-over with the opening of The Hippodrome Casino Leicester Square in the former theatre-cum-dodgy-nightclub. Set over four floors, the 1800 capacity £35 million venture will combine a restaurant and lounge bar, cocktail bar, dedicated live entertainment space and, of course, serious amounts of both traditional and state-of-the-art electronic gaming.

Says British entrepreneur and owner Simon Thomas, “First and foremost, we’re not just about gaming. The Hippodrome Casino is about fun, entertainment, great food and drink in amazing surroundings. And if you want to have a flutter on the tables, then we’ve got areas for those with £20 in their pockets as well those wanting to stake higher amounts.”

There will be an intimate 200-capacity performance space, The Matcham Room, built above the former Theatre’s stage promising established stars from the West End and Broadway, world class music legends and emerging talent too. It will stay open to 5am and after the show will morph into an old style speakeasy.

The 90 cover Heliot Lounge Bar & Restaurant on the balcony overlooking the main gaming floor will serve contemporary British and European food and there will also be two private dining rooms with a total capacity of 50. And watch this space for news of the venue’s yet-to-be-revealed world-class mixologist.

The casino itself will feature a higher stakes area, a multitude of private gaming rooms, a poker deck and even a smoking terrace. The venue is set to create more than 450 new jobs and perhaps even the odd millionaire...
