Kerbisher and Malt

Fish 'n' chips are go! Stephanie Hirschmiller Tuesday, May 10, 2011

We love it when retro favourites get revived and suddenly find themselves the hottest ticket du jour once again. And this year, it’s definitely the turn of the humble fish and chips to make a hipster comeback!

From Poppies in Spitalfields, the old school East End chippie founded by Pat ‘Pop’ Newland (with its crunch batter cooked to a top secret family recipe) to 1939 established Notting Hill stalwart, Geales (with its a Noughties make-over by Mark Fuller, Oli Burgess and co) branching out into leafy Chelsea Green, we’re all hot for cod, skate, jellied eels and crispy Maris Piper!

But while we hear that Fuller is on the prowl for a third site for Geales, the newest place to get excited about is Kerbisher & Malt, opening today in the up-and-coming Shepherd’s Bush.

We’re talking fresh sustainably sourced fish (haddock, cod, plaice and pollock) all at market prices , twice-cooked chips (made from potatoes grown by local UK farmers), handmade salads (loving the sound of fennel and dill), mushy peas and batters with chip butties a given and fish finger butties an innovation.

Founders Nick and Saul, set up Kerbisher & Malt so they could make “our favourite dish the way we wanted” and they firmly pledge to ensure that no preservatives, dirty oil, neon lights, soggy chips or anything that comes from a packet will find their way anywhere near you whether you’re eating in or taking-away.

Factor in handmade sauces from Tartare to Lemon Mayonnaise, environmentally friendly packaging to match the sustainably caught fish and a regularly changing specials board which promises some innovative surprises and we reckon the boys are onto a winner.
