Libertine

Chinawhite reinvented Stephanie Hirschmiller Thursday, March 7, 2013

Libertine, launching at Chinawhite at the end of the month marks an exciting new collaboration between the West End venue and nightclub entrepreneur (and surgeon – yes really!) Hootan Ahmadi who put himself through medical school running nights at Boujis, Purple and Kensington Roof Gardens.

The name Libertine plays on the artistic, literary and rock ‘n’ roll heritage of Fitzrovia – famous residents included George Bernard Shaw, Jimmy Hendrix and Bob Dylan who made his first European appearance at the King and Queen pub – and it plans to incorporate specially-curated one-off nights and live performances into its weekly calendar.

The reinvented venue boasts three separate yet interlinked spaces. Molecular cocktail lounge Reason & Mankind is (reverse) inspired by one of Britain’s most famous libertines, Lord Rochester (he wrote ‘A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind’). With its snug speakeasy vibe, embossed wallpaper and luxurious velvet banquettes, it opens from 5pm and promises inventive drinks set to play tricks on the eyes and taste buds. Defying reason.

The club itself is accessed via a mirrored glass walkway that leads into the main space. The main bar area is situated on the right with tiers of seating and tables at ascending levels so each patron can cop a 360-degree view of the dance floor and fellow guests (with the exception of the VIP room behind its secret doorway).

Custom-made solid oak tables are finished with dripped gold and framed by pixelated metallic upholstery that changes colour according to the lighting. Rose-gold geometric mirrored hexagons and a 50-foot screen projecting visuals and film. hang on the walls and large illuminated discs are suspended from the ceiling in a 21st century twist on the disco mirror ball. Get in line for the grand opening next week on 13 March.
