MADD

Mango dessert lounge Stephanie Hirschmiller Wednesday, January 18, 2012

MADD about mango? You may just find that all your Christmases have come at once with the launch of MADD, the UK’s first dessert and drinks lounge dedicated to the fruit.

Brainchild of Ralph Monthienvichienchai and Jon Sivak, MADD punters can build their own desserts with fruity input from the venue’s MADDams and MADDmens. Start by choosing from a range of base desserts including Thai favourite, Siam (sweet coconut sticky rice with fresh seasonal mangoes) and zesty mango and passion fruit fool (a twist on the quintessential English version).

Then, as with your favourite fro-yo joint, pile up the toppings – both naughty and nice. Also on the menu are MADD Smoothies – try cream of the crop, a blend of mango, coconut and Greek yogurt sweetened with a squeeze of organic honey.

MADD is open Monday to Thursday 7am (for breakfasts of croissants, muesli and £1 coffees) ‘til 11pm and midnight at the weekends but unlike your typical fro-yo emporium, it also does a mean line in alcoholic treats with a cocktail menu featuring vodka-based mango and pineapple Mangopple alongside twists on favourites such as mango mojitos and daiquiris – for every two ordered together, you can also fill up on a complementary side of mango-esque nibbles.

And if you’re looking for the science bit, mangos contain antioxidant vitamins A, C E, B6, K, potassium, copper, 17 amino acids, can lower cholesterol and act as a potent aphrodisiac – they’re not known as ‘the fruit of the gods’ in Hindu mythology for nothing…
