Morgan Meunier has just expanded on the successful formula of Islington’s Morgan M with a brand new opening in the Barbican and the two storey restaurant promises Morgan’s signature affordable haute cuisine – this time with an additional informal dining room on the lower ground serving up a new MM tasting plates menu.
The decor has been created by Monica Fino of Creative House to reflect the seasonality of the food so diners can relax in the restaurant amid earthy tones of olive green and damson – offset by crisp table linen and statement artwork while the walk-in downstairs space is all rustic bare wooden tables backdropped by an atmospheric exposed wine cellar.
Morgan himself heads up the kitchen alongside Sylvain Soulard and diners can expect new seasonal must-trys of Pavé of turbot meunière, Leek fondue, Mushroom ravioli, Celeriac purée, Girolle veloute and Deben Valley Mallard duck aux epics in red wine and liquorice jus. A French dominated wine list ranges from humble Vin de Pays to Premier Grand Crus.
But if you can’t decide, you can also opt for the whole shebang with the six course Autumn Tasting Menu featuring Butternut soup with rosemary and olive oil, Wild mushroom tempura, Crayfish and lobster cannelloni with tarragon and Jerusalem artichoke soubise, Red Leg Suffolk partridge with chicory tarte tatin and Pineapple soufflé.
Downstairs, the entry-level tasting plate menu consists of smaller versions of those trademark dishes such as Ravioli of snails in Chablis, garlic froth and red wine jus and Seared pressed foie gras with fig caviar and toasted brioche – perfect for Gallic style grazing.
