Rupert and Jo Clevely’s pub group Geronimo Inns is adding another venue to the fold this month with the launch of The Oyster Shed in the City serving up a mean mix of seafood, trad Brit dishes and lashings of fizz, wines, whiskies, ales, stouts and cocktails.
Bar Snacks range from Jersey Rock Oysters, Cockles and Whelks, Salt Cod Fritters, Quail Scotch Eggs or the more exotic Pickled Octopus starting at a budget busting £1.75 a pop and then if sharing’s your thing, try the platters: Fishmongers’ Board (Smoked salmon, spiced prawns, fish cakes, fish fingers, mackerel, with accompaniments), Butchers’ Board (Mini Yorkshires, roast beef, chipolatas, sausage rolls, spiced chicken and minted lamb sticks) and Grocers’ Board (Cheese straws, sweet corn fritters, crudities, dips, mini hot cheese toasties and garlic mushrooms).
More substantial fare includes mains of Steak and oyster pie, Haddock and chips with tartare sauce and Rare breed burger served with chips and relish. Those with a sweet tooth can finish off with Treacle tart and clotted cream or the more savoury inclined can indulge in the Geronimo cheese board where alongside the Stinking Bishop and Montgomery Cheddar, you can try Geronimo’s very own cheese which is made in Cornwall and kept in a secret location for nine months, before being washed in Young’s bitter!
And talking of booze, you’ll find Asahi, Aspall Cider, Oyster Shed Gold and Cornish Coaster ales jostling for position with wine, Champagne, Japanese whisky, sake and themed cocktails such as Fish House Punch.
The interior is painted a cool white picked out with ocean blues in the furniture and cushion fabrics while floor to ceiling glass windows run across the front of the pub affording unrestricted views of the Thames with its converted wharfs and warehouses. Outside there’s even a big fire pit so kick back and make like you’re on a Cornish beach…
