We’re heading into full on summer mode here at The Handbook, from writing about ice-cream parlours you have to try to the best swimsuits on the market but that isn’t stopping us from taking a peek into the best new restaurants opening this summer too. 

From the new all-day British brasserie everyone’s talking about to the Parisian-inspired wine bar to  know, these are the 10 best restaurants and bars opening this month.

Maddox Tavern

Taking over the former Brown’s restaurant on Maddox Street will be the latest venture from Roger Payne of the Enhance Hospitality group. A new all-day British brasserie, the restaurant has undergone a huge transformation and will feature rich mahogany throughout, wrought-iron railings, Versailles parquet flooring and a copper-topped bar. 

At the helm of this new restaurant will be Jon Grimes. Having worked at the likes of Aqua Kyoto, Kobe Jones in Bromley and Gilagamesh, the menu will honour British classics with refined modern elements. Look forward to dishes such as London cured smoked salmon; Middle White pork sausages with olive oil mash; Te Mana glazed lamb rack, artichokes and charcoal calcot onions; and dark chocolate tart with burnt caramelised banana and honeycomb.

Caia

Named after the Roman goddess of fire, Caia is a new lively neighbourhood wine bar, restaurant and music venue that’s rocking up onto Golborne Road this month. Brought to life by locals of the area, Rishabh Vir and Tim Lang, the space will boast a seasonally changing menu of sharing dishes cooked on the open fire grill. Think garlic and sesame brioche with salted honey butter; asparagus with smoked onion and crispy chicken skin; monkfish with ancho chilli and beetroot; and pork belly with lavender molasses. 

As well as the restaurant space, a 10-seater wine room will be on hand for those looking for something a little more intimate or downstairs in the basement will be a vinyl bar, offering music lovers the chance to listen to a collection curated by Stranger Than Paradise Records founder Noreen McShane.

Bottle & Rye

Heading to Market Row in Brixton Village is a brand new Parisian-inspired wine bar from Robin and Sarah Gill. Bottle & Rye might be a wine bar but it’ll be open all day, offering everything from brunch in the morning through to natural wines come the evening.

Nodding to bistros in Paris, Robin and head chef Ben Hughes-Gage have crafted a menu packed with flavour. Expect highlights to include Ogleshield Gougères with pickled walnut; Vichyssoise oyster tartare; smoked eel brandade with pink fir crisps and provencal herbs; and marinda tomato tarte fine with innes log and kalamata olive.

Bubala Soho

Middle Eastern restaurant Bubala is expanding, launching a brand new brick and mortar site in Soho this month. Having opened in Spitalfields in 2019 following a series of successful pop-ups, the plant-forward restaurant has become a popular restaurant renowned for its bright dishes and fresh flavours.

Their new Soho restaurant will boast 50 covers, including an eight seat counter-style bar and open kitchen. Executive chef Helen Graham and her team will be spinning the decks in the kitchen, specialising in their signature classics as well as a few new menu additions.

Delight in their halloumi with black seed honey; confit potato latkes with toum and Aleppo chilli; hispi cabbage with mandarin and ras el hanout ponzu; and yemeni malawach with stracciatella, kalamata olives and smoked aubergine honey.

Tatale

A new pan-African restaurant will be opening this month from the culinary whizz Akwasi Brenya-Mensa. His first London restaurant, the restaurant will focus on contemporary flavours, sharing stories through the food, art and culture of the restaurant’s setting. 

Opening up inside the Africa Centre, expect really exciting flavour combinations and traditional African techniques coming into their own. Highlights include the ETO plantain tart; black eyed bean hummus with red palm oil and dukkah; chichinga chicken with yassa onion, palm wine pickles and red stew crema; and spiced rice pudding with hibiscus poached pear.

The Baring

A brand new neighbourhood pub is set to open this month, brought to life by Adam Symonds and Rob Tecwyn, ex-head chef of Dabbous and The Henriett Hotel. Taking over the Islington pub, The Baring will promote humble ingredients and seasonal produce, with sustainability a big part of their ethos. 

The menu will feature the likes of bar snacks, starters, mains and desserts. Look forward to smoked eel and pig’s head terrine with horseradish and daikon; roast gurnard with roscoff onion and taramasalata; ricotta gnudi with broad beans and nasturtium; and warm almond cake served with chantilly cream.

Valderrama’s

Love sport but don’t know where to start when it comes to watching the big games at bars? We’ve found a new one that’s worth the wait… Introducing Valderrama’s, the latest sports bar from the 12:51 head chef James Cochran. 

Opening up on 7th July, its opening coincides with the beginning of the Women’s Euros 2022 – as if it couldn’t be better timed! Expect 4K screens viewable from wherever you’re sat and a delicious menu filled with James’ buttermilk fried chicken classics and cocktails.

Mriya

Chelsea’s Mriya is a brand new restaurant from Ukrainian chef Yurii Kovryzhenko and his partner Olga Tsybytovska. Mriya, meaning ‘dream’, will offer Londoners a taste of the country, telling stories through taste and comfort. 

Look forward to traditional dishes of borsch with porcini mushrooms and duck; chicken kyiv with mashed new potatoes and green peas; and zucchini pancakes with stracciatella and smoked trout.

Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar at Harrods

This month will see an exciting new addition to Harrods’ food and drink offering, and it’s arriving in the form of a Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar. Visitors will be able to experience the Maison’s sprawling vineyards as they settle in for an afternoon of sipping bubbles and tucking into light bites. 

Wines on offer will be from the Moët & Chandon Legacy Champagne Grand Vintage and Legacy Champagne Rare Limited-Edition Bottle Collections – with the likes of a 1959 Grand Vintage Magnum worth £4,400 available. While there’ll be foodie dishes such as a cheese delice, a burrata stracciatella, spicy kimchi and black sesame toastie; and the bar’s signature ‘choux love’, a dessert filled with mango and passion fruit diplomat filling.

Barrafina 

Adding another restaurant to its offering, Barrafina will be opening a new venue at the Borough Yards development in London Bridge. Opening its doors on 30th July, the menu has been created by chef director Angel Zapata Martin and will follow in its sisters’ footsteps with classic Spanish tapas dishes and daily changing specials. 

Offering 32 covers, this restaurant may be on the smaller side but it’ll offer the restaurant’s signature leather bar stool dining options for those who like to dine counter-side.

A slightly different inclusion but one worth mentioning all the same, The Other House, South Kensington will open its doors this month. It’s an interesting concept to say the least, offering apartment-style living for its residents with the amenities of a Private Club and hotel services on tap. And the best part? No membership is required.

Offering a home-away-from-home experience, it’ll allow you to feel comfortable no matter how long you’re staying, whether it’s a night, month or even a year.

It’s home to over 200 Club Flats, as well as event spaces, dining rooms and private meeting areas. There are plenty of wellness areas, from the vitality pool to the gym and meditation hub. For dining, expect the all-day street cafe, The Other Kitchen, and a cocktail bar, The Owl and Monkey.
