Last week Pantone announced ‘The Colour of the Year’ for 2021 and we were slightly taken aback…

Instead of a rich and full-bodied, more firey shade of ochre, or a zesty and acidic lemon – that could better reflect our Covid-bitterness – we were served a very placid shade of buttercup yellow, and instead of a (clean) slate or a burnt-out charcoal, we were given pale grey. Although neither immediately draw out that fighting spirit that we’ll all need to tackle next year, if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we need to find the positives.

For over 20 years Pantone have been releasing their Colour of the Year and they usually find a way to reflect the socio-economic terms in the world while doing so. They selected Greenery when they felt we all needed a tech-detox and Living Coral as a reminder for us to stop killing it. And while 2020 was the year of thought-provoking Classic Blue, 2021 is the year of Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Grey. So what does that suggest? Is basking in the light of optimism – or more literally, a cheery yellow wall – what we all need as we will on 2021? Maybe we also need to adopt a more peaceful and patient mindset, the type that is reflected in the cool-toned serenity and familiarity of Ultimate Grey.

According to Pantone’s Executive Director – “The union of an enduring Ultimate Grey with the vibrant Illuminating yellow expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

With that in mind we’ve made a pact with ourselves to make a head start on the New Year with these hopeful yellow and soothing grey buys…
