It’s likely that in the coming weeks you’ll have an NHS letter pop through your letter box inviting you to your local vaccination centre. While it may be a local GP’s surgery or a hospital, there’s a chance you might find yourself somewhere a little more exotic. Like a cathedral, or a closed down Debenhams. Or the set of Peaky Blinders!

Here are some of the UK’s more bizarre vaccination spots, hopefully you’ll be there in no time at all….

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey’s seen a pandemic or two in its venerable 1,000 year lifetime. The Black Death is a recent event in cathedral terms.

The Black Death is a recent event in cathedral terms...

And the latest plague that the Abbey has experienced is Coronavirus, and for the first time it’s got it’s very own role. The huge space has been given over to vaccinating Westminster’s residents (see Stephen Fry, pictured right).

Time Capsule Water Park

From the sublime to the submerged. Coatbridge, just outside Glasgow, plays host to local tourist attraction Time Capsule.

The waterpark has been converted into a vaccine centre, which makes sense given that swimming pools are closed right now by law.

The waterpark includes Tornado Tantrum and the Riptide River, but presumably they’re not injecting pensioners as they fly out of the flumes.

Epsom Downs Racecourse

It’s the vaccination Derby down at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

The world famous track has been transformed into one of the nation’s biggest and busiest vaccination hubs.

Opened on 11th January, the centre is able to jab around 2,000 people a day and is one of seven large-scale centres across the nation.

Presumably you don’t get Clare Balding commentating, though…

Debenhams

Defunct department store Debenhams has got a new lease of life, in Folkestone at least.

Vaccinatees are being invited into the derelict store to receive their covid-19 injections.

Defunct department store Debenhams has got a new lease of life...

It’s a sad end to a once-great high street name, but at least it’s going out in a blaze of glory.

A Nightclub in St Albans

Club Batchwood’s 2-star Tripadvisor rating may have as much to do with the fact it won’t be returning after lockdown as the pandemic. But in place of alleged bouncer violence and expensive drinks it’s now the scene of daily stabbings, with the Covid-19 vaccine.

The club has passed the keys back to landlords the council, who immediately gave the Victorian mansion over to the NHS who rapidly re-tooled the space to be used for vaccinations.

The Set Of Peaky Blinders

Perhaps the most random vaccination centre featured is the actual set of Peaky Blinders.

The Brummie Netflix hit is largely filmed at the Black Country Living Museum, one of those places stuck in a timewarp of yesteryear that you probably went to on a school trip once.

Just outside Birmingham, the mass vaccination centre will nevertheless use the latest technology, even if there is a steam engine chuffing in the background…

The Science Museum

How appropriate that the home of science is also the place to come to receive cutting edge technology in the form of a vaccine developed, trialled, created and injected in less than a year.

The Science Museum will serve North West London’s residents as a key vaccination centre.
