We Review London’s Smallest Grand Hotel

What? Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson, the duo behind London’s award-winning bars Worship Street Whistling Shop and whisky bar, Black Rock, have become hoteliers. Admittedly on a very small scale, The Napoleon is a hotel which features just one bedroom and three bars; could this be London’s booziest building? New? Quite literally building on the success of Black Rock (the whisky bar sits in the basement) Sack, The Devil’s Darling and The Napoleon opened back in April of this year. Where? Sitting between Shoreditch and the City you’ll find The Napoleon Hotel at: 9 Christopher Street, Hackney, EC2A 2BS, www.napoleon-hotel.com […]

Former Strip Club Turns Smokehouse

Once a ‘family run strip club’ (mind boggles), the White Horse in Shoreditch has now gone and been replaced by Smoking Goat, a second venue for the Soho Thai barbeque bar. Ben Chapman, Brian Hannon and Head Chef Ali Borer will bring their expertise from Soho to bear in this exciting new venture in the heart of Shoreditch. Redesigning the interior to both draw on the original features of the concrete 1930s building and evoke the atmosphere one of Bangkok’s late night canteen spots, Smoking Goat has been carefully designed by Champan and guided by project manager Colin Harding and […]

Peckham Levels, the Next Cultural Hotspot

If we told you the next big cultural destination was a huge carpark you’d think the world had gone mad (and that the London property market was getting wildly out of control). But fear not – new venue Peckham Levels may be at a multi-storey carpark, but it’s one you’ll actually want to get lost in. Gone are the days of holding out your car keys gormlessly while wondering where the hell you parked the car (here at least), because seven levels are being transformed into a workspace for artists, designers, makers and entrepreneurs, where you’ll discover exciting emerging talent […]

London’s New Must-See Exhibition

What can you do about boredom? Beat It with a Michael Jackson exhibition. We all have a certain image that comes to mind when we think of Michael Jackson, be it his iconic dance moves, his endless repertoire of songs you just can’t sit still to, or fashion statements like his sparkly white gloves and military jackets. But something we rarely consider is the impact he had on the art world, despite being THE most depicted cultural figure in visual art. So, for the first time ever, works depicting Michael Jackson by over forty contemporary artists are going to be […]

The Stoke House

We Review The Stoke House

What? If the word carvery conjures up images of a down-at-heel Harvester by a busy dual-carriageway somewhere godforsaken like Croydon, then think again. Toby has been allowed nowhere near this ‘modern carvery’ and The Stoke House is a total reworking of the concept, combining excellent cuts of meat, expert smoking  methods and beautiful cooking. New? Sort of, yes, it opened in May. Where? Victoria, right close to the station, in the Nova Building Development. On The Menu: Remember that time Lady Gaga rocked up to the VMAs wearing a suit made entirely of meat? Well the waiters might as well each be wearing one […]

Amazing New Bar At W London

Perception, they say, is everything. One place this is especially true is W London, the Leicester Square hotel is about to launch their new bar celebrating London’s love of design and fashion, and it’s appropriately named The Perception. If London is the worldwide capital of the music, fashion and design industries, Leicester Square has to be its epicentre. So where better for a bar that celebrates the city’s creative energy than W London, the stylish hotel that dominates the Western entrance to the square. The Perception at W London combines bold design, a diverse cultural programme and, of course, killer […]

A New Mahiki Opens in Kensington

London’s clubs are going through a bit of a rocky patch – you’ve got the iconic South Kensington club that’s set to become a fast food joint, you’ve got exclusive Mayfair clubs dropping like flies and even The Handbook’s favourite ski chalet inspired haunt has bid us farewell. In this tumultuous time there is one club that is going strong, so strong that it’s opening a second club; that club is Mahiki and its tiki torch is burning bright. This time the co-founders of private members’ club, Albert’s: Jake Parkinson Smith, Fraser Carruthers and Carlo Carello have joined forces as […]

The Original Igloo Pop-up Returns

This is one igloo where you won’t have to fend off polar bears or go ice fishing if you want to eat. Instead a friendly waiter will pop over and take your order and penguin definitely isn’t on the menu. Coppa Club, between London and Tower Bridges, launched the famous PVC igloos last year and in what is the sincerest form of flattery, they’ve since been copied by dozens of restaurants across the world. The concept is simple, if you’re strapped for space but blessed with an outdoor area and a stunning view of the Thames and City then erect […]
