Lewisham’s New Restaurant: Sparrow

What’s in a name? Well, if you’re husband and wife team, Terry Blake and Yohini Nandakumar, your restaurant name, Sparrow, reflects the kind of food they want to make, because like a sparrow their new Lewisham restaurant won’t be specific to a place or country. Opening next Tuesday, the menu will be a homage to the food they love. The couple met when they worked together at St. John’s and they’ll bring together Terry’s experience as a chef at the likes of BAO, Merchant’s Tavern and Amisfield and Saffron in New Zealand; with Yohini’s experiences at Pollen Street Social, The […]

Vinoteca Soho Review: What We Thought

What: Loosely translated from Spanish as ‘wine cellar/bar’, Vinoteca is inspired by the characterful wine bars of Spain and Italy and boasts a vast list of 200 wines (25 by the glass) from 20 countries. Wine is also available to purchase to take home but an inviting atmosphere and daily changing food menu makes you want to stay. New? Vinoteca opened in Farringdon back in 2005 and have since opened wine bars in Marylebone, Soho, Chiswick and King’s Cross. Where: 53-55 Beak Street, Soho, W1F 9SH, www.vinoteca.co.uk On the Menu: Wine takes precedence here, but far from being overwhelming the menu is split into easily digestible sections; think ‘staff picks’, ‘organic and […]

Lupins Opens in London Bridge

What comes after your bespoke catering company and pop-ups are a success? A restaurant. And if you’re Lucy Pedder and Natasha Cooke then it’s a restaurant in Flat Iron Square called Lupins. The girls met when they worked together in the kitchen at Medlar, they then went on to work together at The Sands End before going on to open The Cross Keys back in 2015. After that they turned their hand to The Cooking Collective, now one of London’s most exciting catering companies and now they are heading to London Bridge to open a restaurant that focuses on ‘sunshine […]

London’s First Potato Pop-Up Arrives

Just when you thought foodie pop-ups couldn’t get any crazier (we’re talking about that HEINZ Beanz pop-up in Selfridges) there’s now a potato pop-up hitting London. Yes you read that correctly, a pop-up dedicated entirely to potatoes. Not just any old potatoes, though, we’re talking Jersey Royals, aka the king of all potatoes. To celebrate the start of the Jersey Royal season, for 2 days only (we really wish it was longer), you can get your hands on a cone of hot jersey royals, smothered in a minty buttery dream with a touch of Jersey sea salt. TV presenter and farmer, Jimmy […]

Sister Act Goes Live and Immersive

When we say ‘singing nuns’, can you really think of anything but the iconic Sister Mary Clarence from the 90s classic Sister Act? We didn’t think so. One of our favourites, the hit 1992 film is set to get a 2017 revival as Amacoast Cinema host the Sister Act Live Choir. Set in the historic Central Hall Westminster, film fans will be treated to an immersive cinema experience, as the Sister Act Live Choir boasts a choir of over thirty gospel singers and full band, belting out songs from the soundtrack. Bringing together diverse groups of people, founder Dele Aro hopes to […]

Matsuri Reopens as Onodera

For the last six months, Bury Street restaurant, Matsuri has been undergoing a makeover and this week will see it rise out of the ashes like some sort of restaurant phoenix as it returns as Onodera, a new Japanese restaurant. Rather than a fusion menu, Head Chef Ryosuke Kishi, is focusing on homely dishes and traditional Japanese cooking techniques. When it comes to ordering, you’re going to want to get the kobe beef robata yaki served with red miso truffle sauce, turbot kobujime usuzukuri and slow cooked duck confit served with red cabbage marinated in orange vinegar. You’ll also find […]

Little Smoke Review: What We Thought

What? Little Smoke is the latest restaurant from Noble Inns, the team behind Smokehouse, The Pig and Butcher and The Princess of Shoreditch. It specialises in meat, with a daily changing menu of whole native and rare breed animals sourced from small independent farmers. It’s then butchered over at Smokehouse before being roasted, smoked and grilled at Little Smoke. New? It opened back in October 2016. Where? City Point, 1 Ropemaker Street, City of London, EC2Y 9AW, www.littlesmoke.london On the Menu: The meat changes daily, the cuts written up on the chalkboard and then are crossed through once they’ve been sold, so […]

Bottomless Sangria at Balls & Company

Sangria Saturdays, it has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? We think so. Bonny Porter, Head Chef and Founder of Balls & Company thinks so too, because from next month they’ll be serving a bottomless sangria Saturday lunch. Between 12pm and 4pm you’ll be able to have two hours of unlimited red, white or rosé sangria whilst you feast on meatballs. Choose from the likes of pork, ricotta, parmesan and milk bread; short rib with sofrito; quinoa with beetroot and feta or carrot with parmesan and sage. ‘SMITHS’ of Smithfield Review: What We Thought

What? All-day dining right opposite Cannon Street station. ‘SMITHS’ specialises in steak but there is a tempting selection of British classics including calamari and fish of the day as well as a separate bar snack menu, cocktails, and breakfast served from 7:30am. New? ‘SMITHS’ of Smithfield was established in the iconic Smithfields meat market back in 2000, but it opened in nearby Cannon Street at the end of last year, and that’s where we headed. Where? 99 Cannon Street, City of London, EC4N 5AE, www.smithsofsmithfield.co.uk On the Menu: Meat is definitely the order of the day here, but that doesn’t stop the rest of the menu […]
