Hawksmoor Turns 10

10 years is a vast amount of time. Think back to 2006 and the event seem more than distant and many have been all but forgotten about. A decade ago MySpace was America’s most visited website (yes, ahead of Google) and Facebook became accessibly to anyone over 13. Footballer Zinedine Zidane caused controversy by head-butting someone on the football pitch and Justin Timberlake dropped Sexyback, arguably the greatest song of all time. 2006 was also the year that a couple of old school friends stumbled across a boarded up kebab shop and, as many do, planned to open their first […]

The Balcon Review – What We Thought

Grade II listed Sofitel London St James is one of the most glamorous building in that weird area down from Piccadilly Circus, at the bottom of Regent Street. One of the most sparkling areas of the city, the streets are so clean you feel as though you could eat your meal from the pavement. We went for the next best thing: dinner at The Balcon in Sofitel St James. Instantly grand, the restaurant is an architectural feat. The double spiral staircase is of course the attention stealer (with staff continually going up and down to retrieve bottles of wine and […]

Santo Remedio: A Holy Remedy

It’s a new day, a new week and with it comes a new restaurant and today is the official opening of Santo Remedio in Shoreditch. It’s a Mexican restaurant but if you’re expecting burritos and fajitas then keep walking this isn’t the place for you. If however you want dishes inspired by Mexican street food and the cuisine of Mexico City, Oaxaca and Yucata then step right in. Using Mexican chillies and cooking techniques to marinate and slow-cook, they’ll be creating dishes such as chicken wings in mole negro, beef barbacoa: six hour slow cooked beef with chile ancho, pasilla […]

BRGR.CO Review – What We Thought

The first thing I noticed upon entering BRGR.CO is how it’s so unlike any other burger restaurant I’ve been in. Avoiding the rustic furnishing and dim lighting and instead opting for a sophisticated décor consisting of dark colours and exposed brick it’s easy to forget you’ve just walked into a burger restaurant. The narrow-but-high space has a feeling of elegance to it, with a mirror at the end of the room adding a feeling of openness. As we took our seats and quickly tucked into a Meantime beer courtesy of the attentive staff, we looked over the menu to see […]

London Coffee Festival Returns

It’s Monday morning which means one thing – nothing is getting done until we’ve had our coffee. In fact, that’s pretty much our daily mantra. And this love is nothing new, as early as the 1600s London was home to coffee houses where Londoners would meet to debate, gossip and sort out business matters. Safe to say that the coffee scene is still strong in London, it is after all home to the largest coffee festival. Taking place on the 7th -10th April at The Old Truman Brewery the London Coffee Festival is a must for any coffee aficionados or […]

Slow-Cooked Dinner and Desserts by Fraise Sauvage

Think of the most beautiful dessert you’ve seen on Instagram and that’s the type of wonder that Fraise Sauvage create. Formerly the product of serious food envy but always seeming just a little bit out of reach for us mere mortals, now you can get your mitts on chocolate saucy pudding and tres leche cake when they pop up at recently renovated Eat 17 in Hackney. If you’re thinking Eat 17 is ringing bells but you’re not sure why, they’re the people behind the heroic barbeque relish that is Bacon Jam. For 8 weeks, Fraise Sauvage will sit on the […]

Berners Tavern’s Nature Inspired Cocktails

London is quickly becoming a super-healthy place to live. It seems like every other new opening is the latest raw vegan superfood smooth place-to-go and every existing restaurant is rolling out a detox menu to make sure we’re pumped full of the goodness we need to get us through the day. What do all these things have in common? The ingredients all come from nature. Unfortunately, what London lacks is actual nature. The high-rise buildings and river certainly provide for nice viewing but don’t quite provide the fresh and crispness that nature provides. Thankfully, Berners Tavern are on hand to […]
