9 of the Cosiest Library Bars

Forget cosy, wood panelled pubs and trendy, cosmopolitan wine bars. This winter, the place to curl up with a nice hot toddy is, believe it or not, the library. No longer the preserve of bookish geeks, pottering pensioners and panicky students, more and more of London’s prestigious hotels and bars are opening swanky, book-filled watering holes, allowing visitors to partake in some seriously scholarly drinking.

Ten Room Sunday Lunch Review – What We Thought

Having received 2 AA Rosettes last autumn, Ten Room at Hotel Café Royal has recently launched a new weekly changing Sunday lunch menu. Of course one of the advantages of the weather being as it is, is that it is perfectly acceptable to go straight from the cocoon that is your bed and out to lunch (if you’re so lucky to sleep that long), where you while away the hours eating good food before returning to bed. And so that’s exactly what we did. The restaurant Ten Room isn’t actually a room; it’s a square within a room borded off by […]

Patty & Bun Land in Soho

London burger giants, Patty & Bun, are soon to be back with their fourth restaurant and this time they are heading to the old Stockpot site on Old Compton Street. Their largest site yet, the restaurant will have 55 covers and will be split over two floors. In the basement will sit an open kitchen and space for 20 diners so they can watch their burgers being flipped. It’s also available for private hire…oh hello birthday burger parties. In a Patty & Bun first they’ll also be building a little bar so that they can serve up cocktails, because burgers […]

Spritz Up Your 2016

If it was summer we’d be out every evening sipping sundowners till, well, the sun goes down. But since we’re still in January and it still gets dark long before we leave the office, our nights tend to be cut rather short. Lack of sunlight hours aside, an evening well spent makes the week feel so much longer and more fulfilled. Combine this potential sense of achievement with the chance to learn something new – a series of talks, Q&As and masterclasses across 3 dates in late January/early February, by which time your other resolutions may have fizzled out. Each […]

Paradise by Way of Kensal Green Review – What We Thought

When it comes to January, I’m firmly in the middle between those who are on a New Year New Me campaign and those who think  ‘I don’t really care, I need comfort in this bleak time.’ Mornings start with raw green juices, lunches are full of nourishing soups and protein filled salads, come the evening though when it’s dark and inevitably raining then all I want is comfort food. I want carbs, I want pudding and heck I’m going to eat it. And when the need for hearty, comforting dishes comes calling then Paradise by Way of Kensal Green’s dining […]

Native: Eat Wild

Growing up in rural Northamptonshire meant that Imogen Davis developed a fascination in the arts of skinning, plucking and foraging wild food, rather like something out of an Enid Blyton novel. Fast forward to university and Imogen met Ivan Tisdall-Downes, the pair ran supper clubs and next month they are set to open their first restaurant focusing on British ingredients, aptly named Native. Ask people what sort of meat they like and you’ll likely to get replies such as pork, beef, lamb and chicken. What you’re less likely to hear is pigeon, rabbit and venison – we understand though, it […]

Best Burns Night Celebrations

Every year, on or near the 25th January, kilt-clad Scots gather to celebrate the life of poet Robert Burns. Once only really acknowledged in the Northern realms, Burns Night has gained popularity down here in recent years and now there are a whole range of patriotic banquets and whisky tastings taking place all over London. If you’re unfamiliar with the rituals of the night, prepare for lots of standing, sitting, eating and drinking – Scots don’t celebrate this half-heartedly. If you don’t know your neep from your tattie don’t fear, you just need to be up for a good time (heads up: it helps […]
