Pizarro Review – What We Thought

Before staying in Valencia this summer I had no idea how popular gin was in Spain. Served in copa glasses so big they were more like fishbowls, gin and tonics became a post-beach ritual alongside a long and lazy tapas dinner. Gin Mare Mediterranean gin means holiday memories can live on as they most certainly did when I was treated to a gastronomical gin and tapas pairing evening at Pizarro on bustly Bermondsey Street. Knowing what I know now I am embarrassed to admit I hadn’t been to Jose or to their sister restaurant Pizarro before my Tuesday night visit. […]

CôBa Opens

Sometimes you have good dreams, sometimes you have weird dreams and sometimes you have dreams that will tell you what to name your new restaurant. That was the case with Vietnamese-Australian chef, Damon Bui, who dreamt that he was back in his childhood home in Sydney as his mum was cooking her legendary butter fried chicken whilst all the kids were running around saying “Cô ba, cô ba, I want your fried chicken!”. “CôBa means “auntie number three”, which is what my mum is called in the family,” Damon explains. “When I woke up, it was as if I could […]

Beef & Brew Review – What We Thought

Minimal. My first impression when arriving at Beer and Brew, the new no-frills steak house in Kentish Town from classically trained Michelin chef Jessica Simmons and ex-financial director Dan Nathan. Kentish Town is very unfamiliar territory for me but the restaurant was easy to find just opposite the tube station. Nestled between a pharmacy and a Western Union, its refreshingly clean, white tiled frontage set the tone for the butchery-themed interior. Greeted and seated by Dan, his passion was clear to see as he talked us through the menu with everything locally sourced where possible. Even the Highwayman gin in […]

The Bowler opens

So this weather isn’t exactly ideal is it? The Indian summer has definitely disappeared as quickly as arrived. It’s the sort of weather that makes us want to stay inside with a big bowl of comfort food. Well it seems like our food prayers have been answered because tomorrow sees the opening of The Bowler. Setting up shop on Monmouth Street, The Bowler is a meatball shop run by Jez Felwick, the guy behind who sells meatballs at festivals  from his van The Lawn Ranger and owners of Polpo, Russell Norman and Richard Beatty – you could call them meatball […]

Sauterelle Review: What We Thought

Last time I visited Sauterelle I knew I was onto something good, first of all there is the location, right in the middle of Bank making it perfect for lunch meetings or drinks after work with my finance friends. Secondly the fact that it isn’t just in Bank, it’s in the magnificent Royal Exchange originally the city’s prime trading floor, architecturally it’s beautiful, when you go, promise you’ll look up and take in the beautiful design, ornate ceilings and grand arches. Thirdly, the food was superb.   So this year after a refurbishment, we decided it was about high time […]

6 of the Best Classic Cocktail Bars

We all know that London is famous (or infamous depending on how bad your hangover was the morning after) for its gin and its beer. However, our glorious capital is less well known for being a champion of the cocktail and is, in fact, the birthplace of such classics as the white lady and the collins as well as more modern favourites like the espresso martini and the bramble. So, in the light of this and the fact it’s National Cocktail Week, we’ve compiled a list of six of London’s finest cocktail bars at which you can sample some of […]

London Restaurant Festival Comes to Town

As the evenings get shorter we love to put our pajamas on as soon as we walk through the door in the evening. Whack on the kettle and heat up a big bowl of soup and we’re going nowhere fast.  London Restaurant Festival is making us re-evaluate what it is exactly about eating out which is so great. Trying amazing food we wouldn’t be able to cook ourselves is a huge part of it but there’s also the social side of it – the buzz in a restaurant as everyone oohs and aahs over their meals, whips out their phone […]
