Surprising combo at Oaka

If you’ve never been to the South London area of Kennington, there’s now a great reason to visit. Adding to the famous Oval cricket ground and a scattering of quirky pubs, brand new Pan-Asian restaurant ‘Oaka’ has just opened, handily just across the road from Kennington tube. Oaka at The Mansion House is part of the fusion concept taking off within the London food scene. However, rather than showcasing a blend of two cuisines, Oaka fuses food and drink, serving up the finest Asian cuisine with a selection of hand-crafted ales from an acclaimed Peterborough brewery. The Handbook had the pleasure […]

Chilli Night at Ben’s Canteen

Rather than staying in and feeling depressed that it is the end of the weekend, this Sunday you should make the most of every last minute of it and head over to Ben’s Canteen on St John’s Hill. Why? Because this Sunday alongside their normal menu, they are serving up Ben Frank’s award winning Texan Chilli. Made from British rare breed beef, pork and wild venison from Cornwall, this is no ordinary chilli. It’s cooked over three days and added to the meat is Madagascan vanilla, 100 % cocoa and 8 types of chilli and served with a smoky bacon […]

Stunning food at Sushinho

The high-powered city peeps based near Liverpool Street now have a new place to fill up on delicious food. Enter the quiet and welcomingly heated (!) haven of Devonshire Square, and you’ll spot Sushinho – a new Brazilian-Japanese fusion restaurant. We were invited to the launch last month, so returned with great anticipation – and we certainly weren’t disappointed. We started our evening downstairs, in the cosy yet sophisticated cocktail bar. The drinks were beautifully presented and paired with tasty plantain crisps which were shockingly moreish! Our taste buds suitably prepared, we made our way to the main restaurant upstairs. Full […]

Dinner and theatre at Broadway House

If you like your theatre accompanied by food, Broadway House may have just the evening for you this Saturday. The club’s restaurant – Brasa – is hosting an unusual night involving three plays…and three courses! Dine on an exquisite menu of chicken breast and truffled celeriac, followed by chocolate brownie and salted caramel ice cream, while three short plays are acted in the restaurant right next to you! You couldn’t be closer to the performers, and right amongst the action while you savour each course. The first play is fittingly ‘The Last Supper’ by Liam O’Grady, followed by the comedy […]

Kua ‘Aina: Hawaiian burgers in Soho

The perfect antidote to the rainy weather, Kua ‘Aina is a surprising Hawaiian haven in very central London. Hidden just off Regent Street, this cosy burger restaurant welcomes you with a playful splash of colour (pink, yellow and aquamarine conjure the tropical beach and sea), a rough and ready décor, and the alluring smell of smoky meat. Although the main draw for Kua ‘Aina virgins is probably the unique ‘lava’ method of grilling, we’d wager the restaurant probably guarantees regular custom with its fun, friendly vibe and casual dining appeal. Co-owner Ed Bardos, who worked in a Kua ‘Aina abroad […]

The Penny Black: Great British Food on Fulham Road

Since opening in 2011, The Penny Black on Fulham Road has won a reputation of serving great British food in a casual but sophisticated setting and The Handbook were lucky enough to go down and try it. The restaurant is informal but still classic, great service but unpretentious; it has none of the potential stuffiness of a white tablecloth restaurant. The restaurant is set with low intimate lighting and the walls are adorned with original art work from street artist Blek le Rat, adding a slight edge. At the front of the restaurant stands a busy bar which has over […]
