St James Hotel and Club

For a sublime afternoon tea experience head down to St James Hotel and Club. Set in a wonderfully discrete location on Park Place and nestled between Mayfair and Piccadilly this hotel screams pure luxury. On Thursday nights particularly, the bar is the place to be seen, with nonchalant beats from DJ Bas Ibellini and a young, rich, good-looking crowd. The 1930s artwork is quite incredible to gawp at while you sink into their deliciously comfortable chairs. All guests are presented with sweet, innovative newspaper cones filled with flavoured popcorn such as ginger and smoked bacon or chicken tandoori. The tea […]

Prada

Prada seem to have taken pole position yet again with their new Spring/Summer 09 advertising campaign. Photographed by the highly acclaimed Stephen Meisel and Heidi Slimane, the collection is Classicism with an edge. The women’s collection has been shot to look like an ancient stone bas-relief. Like the mythological characters, the models are positioned as though they are all interconnected, creating a dance-like effect. With porcelain skin against the brilliant gold and python print, Meisel shows just how integration between ancient and contemporary is done. For the menswear, Heidi Slimane captures timeless classicism with black and white and poetic stillness. […]

Twilight – The Movie

When Christmas rolled around again, cinema-goers were expecting the usual Harry Potter release, filled with magical effects and festive cheer. When the latest instalment was delayed, and we were handed Twilight instead, a fantasy vampire movie based on novels by Stephanie Meyer, few would have anticipated chart-topping success, let alone the spawning of a media phenomenon – but here it is. Twilight topped the box office on its opening weekend, taking £2.5 million following a massive $49.6 million in the US the week previous. The London premiere caused quite a commotion, with hundreds of teenage fans turning out to catch […]

The West Hollywood hotel is set to reopen on January 8th with a luxurious boutique feel under the label Andaz, a sub-brand within the company offering design-driven environments, vibrant social spaces, and friendly yet attentive service. The hotel first opened in 1963 as Gene Autry's Hotel Continental, the first high-rise on the Strip. Its location, close to noted celeb hangouts of the '70s such as Whisky a Go Go and House of Blues, meant that it […]

Goodone

We are all well aware, as savvy citizens of the earth, that the 21st century obsession with throwaway fashion is a toxic and damaging habit. Those lunchtime trips to Primark for frivolous treats are racking up and the time has come to actually bite the organic-eco-fair-trade bullet. And no it does not mean wearing hemp. Enter Goodone, a fast-expanding company based in East London which has captured the attentions of the media through its creative and charitable concept. The two fashion graduates behind the firm source local materials and fabrics, from recycling collections and local business cast-offs, and rework them […]

Madonna for LV

When Style.com let slip a rumour about Madonna starring in the Vuitton Spring 09 campaign in November, no-one would have anticipated such a fast turn-around – not with simultaneous divorce proceedings, anyway. But yet again Madonna has proved herself to be beyond human capability, and churned out another killer fashion shoot to add to her many lists of accomplishments. The shoot, compromising of six images set in a smokey Parisian cafe, depict Madonna showing off her enviable toned physique, modelling an orange feathered skirt as worn by Jessica Stam on the Vuitton runway. Creative director Marc Jacobs has taken the fashion house […]

Beach Blanket Babylon

Some men (lets start on a traditional and somewhat sexist note) choose to take a first date to a flashy, overpriced venue; perhaps a hotel bar, a staggeringly expensive restaurant possibly filled with bankers, their dates and all of their respective pinstriped friends. While impressive this is not always the ideal way to romance your chosen paramour. Beach Blanket Babylon, although ostentatious in dcor, is a fantastical place full of mysterious passages and dark nooks to seduce your date. And it is worth the money. The roaring lions head, as you walk in, is magnificent; the lighting emitted from the […]
