Fancy yourself a trip to the moon? Sure, we might not all be able to afford a trip around space like billionaire Bezos, but we can still enjoy a trip to the moon this weekend. Ok, a trip to Kensington Town Square to see a giant pop-up moon at the very least…
This week sees the touring Museum of the Moon arrive in the capital, meaning Londoners can get that dreamy up-close photo of the moon (albeit staged) and give Bezos’ Mars snaps a run for their money.
Museum of the Moon, designed by UK artist Luke Jerram, has landed in Kensington Town Square for a five day pop-up (with a later, longer location yet to be announced). The exciting installation features a seven metre sized moon and features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre of this internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the actual moon’s surface – pretty cool.
This first instalment at Kensington Town Square will be running until Sunday, offering eager stargazers, astrologers and budding astronauts the opportunity to get up close to the moon, albeit in replica form. It uses a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.
Jerram is the same artist who brought the city the Gaia exhibit – the giant Earth that took over the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich earlier this summer.
The Museum of the Moon has been showcased across the UK and will pitch up for a longer run from 17th – 30th August. The location is yet to be announced but it’ll be an outdoor venue.
This pop-up installation is part of the Kensington + Chelsea Festival, an exciting two month long cultural festival. The festival is running until 31st August and will see everything from circus performances and dance troops to poetry and other exciting artworks showcased throughout the boroughs.
Whether you identify as a selenophile or you just fancy gazing up at a moon-like replica this weekend, make sure you add the Museum of the Moon to your weekend agenda.
