Like sports drama films? Enjoyed Uncut Gems? Then you might want to keep an eye on Netflix’s upcoming movie Hustle, which is set to release in June, and stars Adam Sandler in a dramatic role away from his more famous comedy characters.

Netflix’s 2019 crime drama Uncut Gems was a hit for the streaming service, and proved again that the often critically lambasted Sandler can do well with serious roles. Though Hustle isn’t directed by the Safdie brothers, Netflix still hopes to replicate Gems’ success and capitalise on Sandler’s star power to rake in viewers. The film is focused on the world of the NBA, and sees Sandler in the role of Stanley Sugarman, a former basketball scout who strikes gold by finding an unknown but extremely talented Spanish player, Bo Cruz with the potential to jumpstar both of their careers.

The young basketball prodigy however has had a difficult past and has a struggling family to support, and is reluctant to put himself forward despite Stanley’s attempts to win him over. It’s not just Bo who has family issues though: as shown in the film’s trailer, Stanely also has trouble with balancing his work and family life. “I haven’t been home on my daugther’s birthday for nine years running” he laments in one scene. Frictions between him and his wife Teresa (played by Queen Latifah) make things worse, and NBA higher ups are unconvinced by him. Still however, he remains undettered.

Alongside Sandler and Queen Latifah, the cast also gets some star power from the legendary Robert Duvall, and is also joined by Jaleel White, Ben Foster and Mariá Boto. Also appearing are NBA stars Anthony Edwards, Trae Young, Jordan Clarkson and Seth Curry. Juancho Hernangómez, who plays Bo, is also a real life professional NBA player, who currently plays for the Utah Jazz. The new film is set to release on 8th June, and may yet be another acclaimed dramatic Adam Sandler film.
