Amy Adams can currently be seen as Giselle as she moves to the suburbs in Disney+’s upcoming Disenchanted, sequel to Enchanted – but her next film after that is a decidedly different suburban affair. Adams is taking the starring role in Nightbitch, currently in production for 2023, a horror film (with comedy elements) based on a book of the same name released last year. She plays a stay-at-home mother, who finds herself growing concerned that she’s becoming a dog. Intrigued? Then read on.

The novel Nightbitch arrived on shelves in July of 2021 but had already attracted the attention of film producers while it was still in the process of being published. Penned by US writer Rachel Yoder, the book received positive reviews on release and was included in several best-of-year lists. Though the plot of both the novel (and film) are pretty weird at first glance, the supernatural elements are allegorical: Yoder wrote the book as a reaction to motherhood and the changes she felt in her home and work life. The novel and film are both darkly humorous, with the struggles and issues experienced in motherhood being explored in an offbeat but still compelling way.

Adams’ mother lives in the suburbs and feels increasingly boxed in by her new routine of raising a toddler, and the general stresses and difficulties that come with it, as well as a straining relationship with her husband. She begins to become aware that she’s (possibly) turning into a dog. As she becomings increasingly convinced of these canine changes, she turns to a mother support group for help in concealing her new discovery.

The adaptation doesn’t have much in the way of photos or a trailer, nor is there a particularly expansive synopsis, but what is known is that it’ll also star Scoot McNairy, known for his roles in Argo, 12 Years A Slave and True Detective, alongside Ella Thomas (Ballers, Supergirl, Mary Holland (Veep, Senior Year) Garret C Phillips (Saved By The Bell) and Jason Ritter (Gravity Falls, Parenthood). The film is directed by Marielle Heller, who previously directed The Diary of A Teenage Girl, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me?. There’s no set release date yet, but it is on track for a 2023 release.
