Drive Away Dolls: The New Road Trip Comedy We’re Excited For
2024 is shaping up to be a brilliant year for films, with Zendaya‘s new drama Challengers and Austin Butler’s Bikeriders landing in cinemas soon. Another film worth checking out this week is the comedy road trip movie, Drive Away Dolls, directed by Ethan Coen.
One-half of the hit-making duo, the Coen brothers, he will be flying solo with this new release and we can already tell it’s set to be a mega-hit. Out in cinemas this March, it features an impressive cast including Margaret Qually (Maid), Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and Matt Damon (Air). Here’s why you should be watching Drive Away Dolls…
What is Drive Away Dolls about?
Drive Away Dolls centres around Jamie (played by Qualley), a young woman who revels in being a free spirit and doing what she wants in life. She’s recently broken up with a girlfriend, another in a series of relationships gone sour, and feels fed up with being unable to find someone compatible with her. Her close friend, Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan, who’s also starring in Apple comedy The Beanie Bubble) is reserved and shy, and is constantly told she should take a leaf out of Jamie’s book and loosen up a bit.
With both unhappy at the state of things, Jamie and Marian decide to take themselves on an impromptu road trip across the country to Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. They’re all set for the uninhibited freedom of the road, but their adventure takes a turn when they get mixed up with a band of criminals.
Who else is in the cast?
Of course, this being a film directed by a Coen brother, the criminals that start pursuing them aren’t entirely competent- and it seems from the trailer that Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon’s characters are involved in the criminal underworld.
We also see in the teaser that Jamie and Marian, after leaving town, discover a suitcase in the trunk of a car that they steal. “We should see what’s in here” says Marian. “I bet it’s locked” replies Jamie- but of course, it isn’t, and the two look amazed at their finding. Whether it’s money, drugs or something else, whatever’s in the case is clearly valuable, and whoever is pursuing them is desperate to get it back.
The rest of the cast meanwhile includes Beanie Feldstein (American Crime Story: Impeachment), Bill Camp (The Leftovers), Colman Domingo (Ma Raineys Black Bottom) and Joey Slotnick (Plane).
When will it be released?
Drive Away Dolls is in cinemas from today, 11th March 2024.
