Everything To Know Ahead Of The Golden Globes This Weekend
Hollywood awards season is here, and while we might be looking ahead to what shiny new films are coming out this year, the Golden Globes has recently released their nominations for the best of the big screen in 2023.
There’ll be plenty of hype and discussion- will Nolan beat Scorsese? Will Barbie add to its huge box office haul with golden gongs? And what will the Globes mean for the Oscars later this year? The Golden Globes also honours the best of TV as well, so with that in mind here’s our preview of everything to expect from this year’s ceremony.
When are the Golden Globes?
Soon- on Sunday 7th January to be exact, though if you’re in the UK it’ll technically be in the early hours of Monday morning. The Golden Globes are usually a more fast and loose affair than the Oscars, and subject to a few controversies in recent years, but the ceremony is back in full force this year, hosted by American stand up Jo Koy.
A full list of individual awards presenters hasn’t yet been announced, but we do know so far that Amanda Seyfried, Angela Bassett, Will Ferrell, Julia Garner, Michelle Yeoh and Suits duo Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams will be among the faces appearing.
What films have been nominated?
On the film side of things, the list of movies honoured are largely what you’d expect if you’ve been following awards buzz so far- historical dramas Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are leading the pack for Best Motion Picture (Drama), with their respective directors Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese tapped for director awards, and stars like Lily Gladstone, Cillian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro are up for acting roles.
Also in the drama mix are films like Maestro and Past Lives, and Barbie, Poor Things, May December and The Holdovers picked for the Musical or Comedy category. Margot Robbie is nominated for playing Barbie in the Musical/Comedy Actor/Actress categories, along with Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Nicholas Cage, Timothée Chalamet, Matt Damon, Paul Giamatti and Joaquin Phoenix.
What TV has been nominated?
In TV, Drama nominees include The Crown, The Last of Us and The Diplomat, as well as the last season of family infighting saga Succession, which is likely the strongest contender. The Comedy cohort has The Bear, Ted Lasso, Jury Duty and Only Murders in the Building fighting it out for the top award. The Globes also recognise Limited or Anthology TV series, – Beef, Lessons in Chemistry, Fargo and Daisy Jones & The Six are some of those nominated.
Given there’s six acting categories on the TV side of the awards, it’d take up a lot of space to list them all off, but some of the big names are Elizabeth Debicki as Diana in The Crown, Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us, Helen Mirren for 1923, Brie Larson for Lessons in Chemistry, Riley Keough for Daisy Jones & The Six, and seemingly everyone- Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook– nominated for Succession.
A few other categories worth mentioning are Best Original Song, with three picks from the Barbie soundtrack: What Was I Made For? By Billie Eilish and Finneas, Dance the Night by Caroline Ailin, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and I’m Just Ken by Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt. The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse are two of the films fighting for Best Motion Picture (Animated), and there’s a new category for Best Performance in a Stand Up Comedy or Television, and Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah and Sarah Silverman are all on the list.
