Ryan Gosling And Emily Blunt’s New Comedy, The Fall Guy, Is Out Today
The world might still be entranced by the Barbie movie and Ryan Gosling’s starring role as Ken, but the actor himself is moving on to new pursuits.
The Fall Guy, releasing today, sees Gosling play a successful but past his prime stuntman, Colt, who is roped into a new film directed by his ex-girlfriend (played by Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt). Filming plans though are disrupted when the movie’s leading man, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor Johnson) disappears, and Colt is called on to help track him down.
What is The Fall Guy about?
Gosling continues his comedic streak from Barbie but also other films like The Big Short and The Nice Guys, playing the seasoned stuntman Colt Seavers. The Fall Guy is a reimagined, rebooted version of the original The Fall Guy, an adventure TV series from the 80s, though this Colt is past his prime and down on his luck. An injury sustained from a stunt gone badly wrong (which Colt believes is squarely his fault) means his bombastic stunt career is at an end, forcing him to find another job as valet. Or so it seems, until the powerful Hollywood exec Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham in a role not dissimilar to hers in Ted Lasso) comes knocking and asks him to work again on a new film. He’s reluctant of course, particularly as it’ll be directed by Jody Moreno (Blunt), his ex who he didn’t leave on the best terms with.
That screwball comedy dynamic is a dilemma enough without the serious issue that Tom Ryder (Taylor-Johnson), mega action star and lead of the film is missing. Colt agrees to assist in finding where he’s got to, but finds that perhaps there might be more to the disappearance than he’d realised. There might be stunts and explosions galore, but at the heart of the story is a relationship that went wrong (and whether it can ever be fixed). Metalstorm, as the fictional movie within a movie is called, is Jody’s first as a director, and despite old feelings Colt feels he has to save it- whatever the cost.
What else do we know?
There’s a few other big names in The Fall Guy, including Winston Duke (Us) Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything All At Once). The film has received glowing reviews from critics across the board for its lead performances and fun story. Plus, Gosling and Blunt have made an entertaining pair at press events in the lead up to the release of the film.
