Major Potterheads will already be counting down the days for this… But for those who haven’t read the latest issue of the Daily Prophet, there’s set to be a reunion special dedicated to Harry Potter and all of his magical antics.

News of the HBO Max reunion special episode, announced on the day of the 20th anniversary of the cinema release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, spread as quickly as a Quidditch game ends once the Snitch has been caught. So, you know, instantly. And it’s fair to say that Potterheads across the globe are excited.

Following on a similar path to the Friends: The Reunion episode that was released earlier this year to coincide with the sitcom’s 25th anniversary, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will see our favourite cast members and director Chris Columbus come together to talk about the highlights, memories and celebrations of the worldwide phenomenon. Here’s everything you need to know…

Will all of the cast be reunited?

You can count your blessings as your favourite three will be returning for the reunion. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint will all be on hand, spilling all on their favourite moments and memories that came out of the time spent on the Harry Potter set.

Joining them will be director Chris Columbus who will dish out the dirt on the characters and reveal some of the trials and tribulations faced when creating such a phenomenon, as well as the rewards that came from it.

It’s been revealed that a few other friendly famous faces will be joining them, including Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Robbie Coltrane, Bonnie Wright and the Weasley twins, Oliver and James Phelps, amongst others.

How about J.K. Rowling?

Author of the novels, J.K. Rowling will not be reuniting with the cast for this special one-off show, but we can expect to see old clips of her from archived videos.

What will the reunion cover?

Last week saw the announcement arise, the same day that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released onto the cinema screens for the first time. Fans of the films can expect to gauge a deeper understanding and love for the magic that transposed onto screen.

HBO Max said that the special reunion will “tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations”. Fans will be invited “on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time”. And if that doesn’t get you excited, we don’t know what will…

Expect a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time.

When will it be released?

So for any American readers, there isn’t long to wait at all! Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will arrive on the streaming service on New Year’s Day – 1st January. But as us Brits can’t access HBO Max, we might have to wait a little longer as there’s no UK release date announced just yet. We wouldn’t be surprised if it made its way across the pond on a broomstick to arrive on New Year’s Day too, though.
