If your standard barbecue fare is a handful of charred chipolatas and some blackened, supermarket-bought burgers then you’re doing life all wrong. The journey to taming the tongs and thrilling your guests, starts, somewhat unexpectedly, in Somerset…

Nestled into the rolling hills of the county that gave us fascinating natural phenomena such as Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and Jacob Rees-Mogg, lies our hands-down favourite farm shop, at The Newt. It’s where the best London barbecues are born, and set at the centre of a stunning country estate, it’s simply gorgeous. What’s more, they now deliver straight to your door courtesy of Mobile Newt. So what’s on the menu at our fantasy barbecue?

Starters

Just because it’s al fresco doesn’t mean that decorum goes out of the window. Away with hungry guests huddling round waving paper plates, serve a proper meal and start at the beginning, with bites and nibbles.
We’re opting for a nettle and Cheddar quiche, a traditional quiche filled with nettles, caramelised onion and Westcombe Cheddar, along with pork and apple sausage rolls, made with handmade puff pastry. And to really impress your diners, lay out a sourdough loaf and some smoked trout pâte, whipped up from some of The Newt’s smoked trout, creme fresh and horseradish sauce.

Thinking about sides? A tomato gazpacho, made from fresh tomatoes from The Newt’s summer harvest and served with mozzarella and tomato with basil salad and some barbecue seared veg will set things up nicely for the coming mains.

Main course

The Newt’s stunning estate and gardens provide the bakery, butchery and green grocery that’s shipped via Mobile Newt. It’s not just a mouthwatering morsel of beef, but also a piece of Somerset and a testament to the traditional organic farming that the farm at The Newt has exemplified for generations.

Serve your guests a beef brisket burger, brimming with flavour and topped with blue cheese or cheddar and a pickled red onion for the quintessential barbecue experience, but with fabulous restaurant-quality ingredients. Because barbecues are all about sharing, make sure to grill some halloumi skewers (add in peppers and courgettes – and take a moment to enjoy the halloumi, fresh from the creamery at The Newt), some chicken thigh (coated in a delicious rosemary and thyme marinade). The piece-de-resistance, barbecued pork belly prepared with The Newt’s chilli marinade.

It's not just a mouthwatering morsel of beef, but also a piece of Somerset...

Barbecues aren’t barbecues without condiments, and dressings and sauces available for next day delivery along with your order include a fabulous plum brown sauce or why not opt for a delicious apple and ginger chutney?

Pudding

Somerset strawberries, of course, hand-picked from The Newt’s gardens and served with clotted cream. Alternatives (or, if you’re me, additionally) a selection of Somerset cheeses and crackers and a box of fresh seasonal fruits.

Drinks

The Newt’s sister estate, Babylonstoren in South Africa, produces The Newt’s party trick, their Mourvèdre Rosé. It’s perfection, bottled. Back in Britain, offer your diners traditional Somerset cyder, fresh from the estate’s state-of-the-art cellar.
