Is Geoff Leong on a mission to take over London with his modern Chinese and Taiwanese fare?
We reported in March that the entrepreneur had reopened Hampstead celebrity favourite, Goldfish following a massive refurb and expansion. And then last month he launched a Bayswater outpost of China Town staple, Leong's Legends and now Goldfish City is opening this summer and promises a unique new Chinese brasserie style experience in the heart of London's Square Mile.
An authentic dim sum trolley of steamed, aromatic parcels will certainly make a working lunch a speedy affair. But in addition to emerald green spinach, prawn dumplings and fragrant seafood ramen miso, one thing that's sure to be a big hit with the City's big hitters is head chef Kevin Chow's award-winning Mocha Ribs. The meat is marinated in Champagne and then coated with Varlhona dark chocolate and coffee beans! But the ginger scallops – perfectly seared and served in the lightest soy sauce with ginger and tobiko – is a more cholesterol conscious alternative.
Speedy bento boxes will also be available and feature a choice of succulent roast duck, chicken or char siu roast pork with seasonal vegetables, rice and soup.
Chow, the Malaysian born head chef, has worked extensively at the Four Seasons and Grand Hyatt Hotels in Singapore and has also spent a year at the famous Raffles Hotel where he drank in innovative emerging trends. Specializing in highly unique, yet traditional cuisine, he combines the most popular dishes from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore and his kitchen is a strictly MSG free zone!
Located in a Georgian building on Gresham Street, the restaurant is spread over three floors decorated in signature muted black bamboo and organic sustainable woods. Also catering to a party loving after-work crowd, there's a cool basement cocktail bar, private VIP area and Tokyo-inspired state-of-the-art karaoke booth – just the right side of tacky!
Ah we can just feel a rendition of 'I Will Survive' coming on. Chinese Elvis eat your heart out!
