The GrEAT British Restaurant

The GrEAT British which has recently opened on North Audley Street in Mayfair, wanted to create an atmosphere which was somewhere between a traditional British cafe and top London restaurant without the pretentiousness and high prices, but still with seriously good food. They have done just that. With high wooden panel walls, table tops made from Victorian fireplace tiles, and low warm lighting, you certainly don’t feel as if you are in the bustle of modern London, more a little country town.

This is even before the food, think Sussex cheese sausages, roast Suffolk lamb, Devon clams and, kedgeree. All the ingredients are sourced in Britain, including the wine where only English grape varieties are used. We opted for Yorkshire saddleback pork belly, House black pudding with Luscombe Cider  and mash potato and the Loach Duart Salmon, Morecambe Bay shrimp fritter and heritage cauliflower, although we  were seriously tempted by the Shepherd’s pie which uses shredded lamb rather than minced lamb. For pudding we had chocolate fondants with salted caramel and hazelnut ice cream, which was wonderfully decadent and would have been a, 10 out of 10, although the ice cream was a little over salted. Serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and supper The GrEat British really is in a league of its own when it comes to quintessentially British cuisine.
