Another television programme that has recently been added to my Saturday night roster (already featuring Strictly Come Dancing) is The X Factor. As a fan from the beginning, it is frankly a relief that it is finally back on my screen. Once again, I can sit there and moan about sob stories, pitch issues and vibrato like I’m an expert. Well we can all dream, right?
The first live show was broadcast on Saturday, and viewers were given a glimpse into who might become the success stories of this year’s competition. Sharon Osbourne’s team had a tough week, as Shelley Smith was in the bottom two, and Lorna Simpson was voted out – although Sam Bailey, prison officer with a big voice, is widely thought to be an early favourite. Nicole Scherzinger’s ‘schamazing’ team comprises Tamera Foster, another early favourite, Hannah Barrett, and flower-clad Abi Alton who enjoys writing her own songs. Gary Barlow, who has just announced that this is his final season on The X Factor, also has a strong team: edgy London boy band Kingsland Road, ‘sweet, but street’ Rough Copy, and X Factor-formed girl group Miss Dynamix. Louis Walsh is in charge of the boys this year: Luke Friend, who hasn’t washed his hair for a year, and Sam Callahan and Nicholas McDonald, who are sure to get a lot of votes.
So this year’s X Factor line-up has all the necessary ingredients for some great television. The big question is, will the winner manage to get the Christmas number one this year?
