Chop Shop: Review

Over in Haymarket the Chop Shop has just launched their new Sunday lunch set menu: a beef rib chop, roast potatoes, side and half a bottle of red wine for £35.

We arrived late afternoon to find the restaurant had mellowed after a busy lunch service and there were just few a couples spending long, lazy afternoons with bottles of wine. The restaurant itself is long, narrow with tables for two down the side, at the end it opens out into a larger space where there was a mix of tables for larger parties. It is all very laid back, red brick walls, dark wooden floors and exposed light bulbs and low hanging lights. Our gaze was drawn to the large ornate, but rustic bar at the front which had shelf upon shelf of spirits and bottles and the meat cleavers hacked into the walls!

The beef rib chop was a good hunk of meat, just the sort of thing that you need to sort you out on a cold Sunday afternoon, cooked perfectly. Roast potatoes arrived in enamel cups alongside the chop, just the right amount of crunch to fluffy potato, but the amount you could fit in an enamel cup was just not enough – we needed a couple more and I can imagine hungry men definitely would!

Piping hot cheesy leeks, were meltingly good and were devoured eagerly but the lukewarm and hard sprouts, lardons and chestnuts left us a little underwhelmed. It isn’t trying to be a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings but another side wouldn’t have gone a miss.  That said if you are looking for an alternative, low key but delicious Sunday lunch then Chop Shop have got it right.
