Places to go during Wimbledon

With the Wimbledon Championships 2014 now underway, we bring you the top events and venues going on around London over the next fortnight of legendary tennis to keep you occupied if not sat in the stands of Centre Court…

The Ampersand Hotel

Enjoy a Wimbledon inspired afternoon tea at The Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington in true British style. The tea boasts some delightfully themed pastries such as coconut mousse, mango and passion fruit jelly tennis ball on a lime sponge tennis court, gingerbread tennis rackets and strawberry and cream tarts. Available from the 21st July until 6th July.

Kettner’s in Soho is championing the quintessential Wimbledon ingredient, the strawberry, with homemade strawberry scones, chocolate dipped strawberries or a strawberry macaroon, just to name a few, and you will be well on your way to being part of the Wimbledon excitement. Available from the 23rd June until 6th July.

The Bulgari

The Bulgari Hotel has created an edible “Tennis Ball”, made with strawberries and cream sponge cake with a white chocolate shell, set to look just like the traditional Dunlop ball. There is also the “Tennis Court” dessert: a pistachio and raspberry opera cake. We’re tempted to skip the tennis and just eat instead.

– Daphne’s

The ice cream bike returns to South Kensington’s Daphne’s, since proving to be hugely popular during the tennis hype of Wimbledon last year. As well as altering the restaurant’s décor, shifting from a European Italian vibe to more of a Wimbledon-inspired style, the homemade ice creams on offer include those with labels such as Chocovic, Nutty for Nadal and Strawberry and Cantuccini Smash.

– Henry Root

Can’t make it out of Chelsea? Then the Henry Root will be screening live matches on their sleek flat screen TV throughout the Wimbledon Championships.  Also on offer is a typically British Wimbledon menu, which includes classics such as cucumber sandwiches and strawberries, meringues and cream, to be enjoyed and washed down with scrumptious cocktails such as the Wimbledon Strawberry Daiquiri.

Aqua Shard

On level 31 of The Shard, the bar Aqua Shard is also joining in with the Wimbledon frenzy, incorporating strawberries here there and everywhere into their menu. Enjoy a Strawberries and Cream cocktail whilst gazing over London’s stunning skyline after a hot day on either Henman Hill or Centre Court watching players battle it out on the courts. And if you’re peckish, the Aqua Shard also offers a Strawberries and Cream dessert with shortbread and white chocolate…

Decorations will be put in place as soon as the first game of tennis at Wimbledon is in play, and both the Bar and Restaurant of Morton’s Private Members Club in Mayfair have promised to be full of champagne and strawberries, naturally. Not only will the Bar be offering an excellent Champagne cocktail, The Pink Lady, but there is also a  millefeuille of strawberries and cream with a strawberry and lemon sorbet – perfectly refreshing for a hot day in June while watching the players suffer from the heat you’ve avoided!

– Bluebird

Chelsea’s renowned restaurant Bluebird on the King’s Road will be screening the matches of this year’s Wimbledon Championships on its giant outdoor screen live during this exciting fortnight. Share a jug of Pimms with friends, and for the Men’s Final match on Sunday 6th July, the Café will be serving a special three-course menu to celebrate, with dishes such as Honey-glazed goat cheese crouton with caramelised figs and a port reduction, Lobster salad with celeriac remoulade, baby gem and imperial Keta caviar, and Eton Mess with seasonal berries and a raspberry coulis . Who needs a ticket to Wimbledon when you can observe play from the Bluebird?!

– Duke of York Square

Another place in London to enjoy and experience the thrill and excitement of the Wimbledon matches over the coming fortnight is the Duke of York Square in the heart of Chelsea. The Square’s 14 ft screen will be broadcasting Wimbledon finals weekend live, with strawberries and cream obviously available for those who want to fully absorb the Wimbledon vibe, alongside Champagne and Pimms. Perfect after a spot of shopping on the Kings Road, you can also book yourself a complimentary cushion on the square for friends and family as an alternative to the tables and chairs. 4th, 5th and 6th

Watch the tennis of Wimbledon in true style at Boisdale of Belgravia at their Grand Slam Party, complete with all things quintessentially British… Think strawberries and cream, Pimms, sandwiches,  and a huge TV screen. The English vibes of Wimbledon tennis will merge with those of these beautiful Scottish Boisdale restaurants. Who knows, maybe the blend of things English and Scottish at the Grand Slam Party may improve our favourite Brit, Andy Murray’s, chances of reaching the final… Let’s hope so! 1st July.
