It was Saturday morning, London was that horrible sort of hot, muggy temperature where the tube is a living nightmare and you lose inches just sweating your way through the crowds. For once we craved light foods rather than the usual carb heavy diet and finding ourselves in need of something to fuel our productive day of lying in Green Park, we headed to Plum and Spilt Milk, located inside the Great Northern Hotel, having heard they recently launched a new healthy breakfast menu.
Inside it is beautifully elegant, dark blue walls, wooden panelling, high ceilings, hanging lights and simple decorations – brass bowls filled with artichokes, pomegranates and aubergines and clusters of mirrors adorning the walls. There are cream leather banquettes and dark blue wing back chairs where you can while away the hours over a large latte and the papers (something that should never be underestimated). It’s peaceful and most importantly cool in this heat.
Alongside traditional breakfast dishes, the new, healthy menu features obvious options such as granola but also more adventurous takes on classics including quinoa porridge, buckwheat crepes and egg white omelettes. We however went for the spelt muffin, with steamed spinach, salmon and a poached egg. The dish was beautifully presented, although at £10 we were rather hoping for a whole muffin or two eggs, but I suppose that were our eyes getting the better of our stomachs.
Whether it was the spelt that caused it or the cooking the muffin was rather dry and tough to chew so we resorted to butter to make up for this, which rather defeated our healthiness but we told ourselves it was good fat (we can’t say this is necessarily true) and proceeded to slather it on, that said the poached egg was cooked to perfection and a golden yolk spilled out on to the generous helping of smoked salmon and when you have a good egg and salmon you have a good breakfast.
We ordered another round of strong cappuccinos and then headed back into the blistering heat, immediately yearning for the coolness inside. So if you’re looking to go out for breakfast but can’t face a full English or a stack of pancakes in this weather or before you holiday then head to Plum and Spilt Milk because they have this healthy breakfast sorted.
