The most exciting thing to happen in Clapham for a while is the launch this month of new all-day café, Fields, from the team behind M1LK in Balham. It’s the brainchild of Aussie, Julian Porter, who opened M1LK at just 21 and his partner, actress and artist Lauren Heaphy.
With emphasis on local produce – many ingredients will be grown on the café’s own roof garden and plant nursery – dishes will include Coal-grilled sausage bao, kewpie, pickled shallot and iceberg, Peat-smoked mutton and beans, garden herb butter and sourdough and Smashed peas, hay-smoked goat’s curd, garden herbs and sourdough. The venue also boasts its own on-site smoker which uses hay, peat and leaves during the cooking process.
Sweet options feature Sticky rice pudding, apple, soured cream ice-cream and sake and Banana bread, Nesquik mascarpone and salted panela, specialty coffee hails from Workshop Coffee Co and Koppi of Sweden – the barista team will also cold press its own organic almond milk – and there’s also heritage apple juice, wild nettle pressé, homemade ginger beer, boozy slushies, natural wines and local beers like Brixton Atlantic IPA.
Interiors have been designed by Julian and Lauren with hand-blown glass lights, bespoke Formica booth tables and collage art by local artists on the walls while the work of local graffiti artists will be showcased on the building’s exterior. The 30-cover space on Clapham Common features an additional heated terrace for a further 80.
