If there’s anything we love at The Handbook it’s a good afternoon tea; delicious cakes and sandwiches down-sized to miniature portions, shrinking down those pesky calories with it meaning you are free to indulge in twice as much! (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it). So when we were invited to Boyds Brasserie, a lounge bar and restaurant focused on smart British fare situated a few minutes’ walk from Charing Cross station, we were more than happy to attend.
Kicking off the savoury section to their afternoon tea are the Potted Shrimps served with Lemon and Crisp Bread which boasts a great texture, perfect to begin. Continuing with savoury, traditional sandwiches are served like Egg Mayonnaise & Watercress on White Bread and Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Dill on Brown Bread; a well-balanced sandwich with a good filling to bread ratio and clever addition of dill.
The sweet section is varied and hosts an interesting array of cakes from the incredibly fresh Raspberry Sponge to the knock your socks with citrus kick of the Lemon Meringue Tart, well countered with the sweet meringue on top. Classic Fruit Cake and Viennese Whirls with a delicious buttery biscuit complete the cake section. The portion sizing of the cakes is perfect to allow them to be sampled and each was executed with panache. And what afternoon tea would be complete without Freshly Baked Scones served with a healthy dollop of Strawberry Jam and Devonshire Clotted Cream?
Adding a little extra sweetness to the afternoon tea is the final offering of miniature vanilla ice creams served in a chocolate flavoured waffle cones, completed with hundreds and thousands sprinkles.
Boyds Brasserie has striven and succeeded to do something different for afternoon tea, which boasts subtle flavours whilst still being suitably indulgent, and remember, half the size equals half the calories.
The afternoon tea costs £19.90 per person including a pot of Tea for 2, or £29.90 per person with a glass of Veuve Clicquot.
