From the talented team behind the hugely popular Discount Suit Company, comes Bethnal Green’s latest watering hole: The Sun Tavern. Sure to become a regular haunt for Hackney locals, it offers an impressive array of food and drink in an amiable and low-key environment.
Keen not to let go of their historic roots, (it takes over the site of a classic east end boozer dating back to the 19th Century) they’ve devised a marvellous drinks menu paying homage to the yesteryear. A medley of mixed drinks takes centre stage with a number based on pre-war recipes alongside an assortment of punches, inspired by 18th century recipes and served, rather excitingly, in individual tankards or vintage punch bowls. Not all fancy concoctions there’s also a wonderful beer selection with a number of local ales and their own house lager and ale, as well as a large variety of Irish whiskies and poitín.
Not just an evening haunt, you can pick up a morning coffee, freshly brewed from Bethnal Green’s Square Mile roastery and even a pastry (or two). Delicious bar snacks are served throughout the day, including pork pies, scotch eggs and mouth-watering grilled sandwiches using breads from local east end bakeries and cheese from Neal’s Yard.
An added bonus is their record player and open-door policy on guests choosing from and adding to the, already extensive, album collection. Certainly a very welcome addition to the plethora of bars and pubs in the surrounding area, this establishment stands out as quite simply: a fun place to hang out day and night.
The Sun Tavern opens 2 October.
