Humans are creatures of comfort, so as the temperature drops and the days get darker it’s all too tempting to stay hidden under an increasing pile of blankets as you worked your way through Netflix’s entire catalogue, until the spring when you’ll emerge from your lair blinking in the sunlight. Well, it’s time to change that. It’s time to get dressed, and no pyjamas don’t count even if you do wear them with proper shoes, and head to Hakkasan, because they’ve just launched their Winter Sunday dim sum menu – perfect timing with the clocks going back.
It’s all about getting your friends together and whiling away the hours drinking Champagne and working your way through not 1, not 2 but 6 courses of steamed, baked, fried and puffed dim sum as well as main meals and puddings, all to the soundtrack of their resident DJ. So The Handbook headed over for the opening day to check it out.
The menu is served between 12pm and 6:45pm and starts with a cocktail – go for the Winter Sour which has autumnal flavours including gingerbread before moving onto a bottle of Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV Champagne which comes with the meal. Food wise you find the likes of crispy smoked duck and pumpkin puffs, a refreshing duck salad, the most delicious salt and pepper squid – if it had come as a main course then we would have ordered it twice over. As a main the lamb chops were good if a little meagre on the meat, that said after 4 previous courses you don’t really need huge portions. For pudding we ordered the apple tatin with blackberry, almond and vanilla crumble but it was the decadent and uber rich chocolate, orange, torte that stole our hearts – just promise us you’ll order it?
Finish with the Ruby Warmer, a dessert cocktail served hot with brandy, port, cinnamon, nutmeg and liquorice bitters or the Seville 33 which is rather like an with marmalade, orange rum liqueur, chocolate bitters, XM VXO rum and Santa Teresa – the result? An alcoholic chocolate orange and who can resist that?
If you’re looking for a somewhere to slouch around on Sunday and eat your way out of your hangover then Hakkasan might not be for you, with the DJ playing, the dark lights and everyone dressed to be seen, it felt more like a Friday night. However if you’re after somewhere to forget the Sunday blues, have had enough of the usual eggs on toast and Sunday omnibus then Hakkasan is the place for you.
