If you love mini doughnuts served with pots of cream and jam to dip them into then you are going to like this review but good things come to those who wait so let’s start at the beginning. Balans Soho Society serves as a bookend to the strip of restaurants directly opposite Westfields Shepherd’s Bush (the other bookend is The Meat Co which is also excellent; clearly this is a good area for dining). It’s one of five venues and is relatively new to the area, the first originating in Soho.
Don’t be fooled by some of the cocktails that may have alluring ingredients like Milk Maid’s Tipple with Black Cow Vodka, Borghetti and Sugar Puff infused milk. The vodka and coffee flavouring cut straight through any subtle sugar puff flavour so it’s just like drinking a White Russian which is fine if that’s what you’re after.
All of the food on the menu was a home-run with no dish dragging behind; even simple dishes like the quesadillas are full of flavour. Yellowfin Tuna Fillet was the starter to write home about though as it literally melted in your mouth.
For mains vegetarian options are slim on the ground, pick from either Gnocchi (what else?) or a Red Thai Curry, which for those of you who shy from spice, is entirely bearable not to mention delicious. Back to carnivores, your choices are varied but the Rib Eye Steak is a classic dish perfectly executed.
Finally we arrive at dessert which you have been waiting so patiently for, the doughnuts are bite size and coated in sugar with a dish of plum jam and a dish or cream for your dunking pleasure. A more polite guest may have cut them in half but like I said, they were bite size so I just stuffed them (with a healthy dollop of jam/cream) into my gob. Not only were they scrumptious but there is a definite element of fun with the sugary miniatures.
Balans is in good company with the high calibre of surrounding restaurants but it holds its own with a great menu where even the mocktails get a thumbs up. After a day traipsing round the shops what could be better to replenish your energy than some mini doughnuts?
