What They Didn’t Teach You at School…

Romance School. Bit sad, isn’t it?

But what about this. Over 9 million of us Brits flirt from behind a screen. Tinder, Happn, Grindr, whatevr. We’re so busy/lazy/shy that romance is pretty much dead. And we killed it. We don’t know about you, but with Valentine’s Day around the corner we think that’s a bit more sad.

So, on a rainy Thursday evening off we trotted to Kettner’s to discover the truth about modern day flirting and hopefully pick up some top tips to bring old school romance back into our lives, whether single or attached.

The evening was hosted by Cate McKenzie, international love coach and psychosexual therapist, and a woman who looks like a cross between a pre-Raphaelite beauty and 1950s pin-up. We must admit we were somewhat dubious about taking love lessons from someone who looked she’d probably never had to actively flirt in her life. But so lovely and bubbly was she (along with the champagne) that it soon became clear that this was exactly the kind of woman who was going to take us back to basics and put the passion back into our faceless flirting.

And do this she did. We started off with some warm-up exercises which involved belting out love songs complete with enthusiastic arm movements; cringe, yes, but necessarily ice-breaking. And after that it was like something between an A.A. meeting and a girly sleepover. And we mean that in the nicest possible way. Cate gave useful advice, such as to always dress like you are going to meet that special someone and to turn on your ‘inner-boiler’ (which we didn’t fully understand, but think is something about going around in a permanent state of semi-arousal in the hope of attracting a mate…).

What was really nice about the evening (beyond the endless canapés) was that it wasn’t just a room full of weeping women and weird men. Everyone was, well, normal. Men, women, singles and couples alike. Which meant you could get real, honest advice from real, honest people at different points along the path of love.

The main thing we learnt was that the course of true love never does run smooth. But we can have a helluva lot of fun while wobbling along it.
