Prior to my review I watched Ceviche Old St’s opening video on their website and decided I liked Martin Morales, head chef and owner, already. His passion was so infectious I felt like I had some sort of personal affiliation with him. Now I knew he could talk the talk but could he walk the walk? (Or cook the food?)
The decor in Ceviche is a collaboration between Martin and the award winning Fabled Studio which can only be described as ‘Chicha’ cheeky or playful. This was reflected throughout the restaurant from the waiting staff to the paintings. Apparently guests are able to purchase the art on display. There’s one particularly colourful painting I might go back for.
We looked at the menu and there proceeded to be a debate about how much food we should order. Finally we narrowed it down to six sharing plates and two desserts between us. My favourite dish was definitely the Ceviche del Día which is lemon sole caught fresh that day with celery, red onion, plantain chifles, sweet potato and classic tiger’s milk.
Ensalada Sierra was another of my favourites which integrates pearl quinoa, hass avocado, tomato, broad beans, coriander and limo chilli vinaigrette salad.
We also had the Habas Andinas – seasonal broad bean and quinoa risotto with bean flowers. The portions in most dishes were well balanced in both quantity and flavour. But I would’ve preferred this one if it was served as an accompaniment or a bed for some meat.
For a carb lover like myself the pumpkin doughnuts with chancaca honey went down almost too fast. They were stodgy but in a good way and I definitely felt like I could indulge after all that nutritious food. The sorbet was good but it can only be described as ‘just sorbet’ after the colourful spectrum of dishes we had received.
The service throughout was excellent with several waiters coming over to check if we were having a good meal. They were all super friendly and were all ready to advise on their favourite dishes and what they thought we would like.
We loved the food so much we considered asking for take-out but deciding we already looked five months pregnant we held back ….
Until next time Martin!
