5 fitness and food clubs in London
2015 is the year of eating clean, getting fit and thinking about our health in general. From Deliciously Ella and Madeleine Shaw to Honestly Healthy and Hemsley & Hemsley, it’s not just clean eating cookbooks and blogs that are a focus, but fun fitness as well – think disco-inspired spinning classes, rooftop yoga with a view and fashionable running clubs. And a few savvy restaurants have noticed the trend, teaming up with different gyms and studios to offer exclusive healthy brunches, lunches and supper clubs. We’ve rounded-up our pick of the best below:
What: 80’s inspired work out on a roof top.
Why: Voga, it’s a mix of yoga and voguing obviously. Taking place on the last Sunday of each month at Coq d’Argent and run by House of Voga, the class is set to an iconic 80s soundtrack – so get your lycra (or should we say spandex) and get ready to strike a pose. Stay afterwards for lunch at the restaurant, you’ll have definitely worked up an appetite.
Where: Coq d’Argent The Poultry, 1 Poultry, London EC2R 8EJ
What: Pop-up yoga and lunch in Marylebone
Why: The Handbook likes to add a sense of occasion to our weekend workouts. So a pop-up yoga lunch club at trendy event space Carousel in Marylebone really ticks our boxes. Especially as the yoga class is hosted by one of the FRAME studio team – The Handbook’s favourite all-round fitness studio catering to both East and West with bases in Shoreditch and Queen’s Park. On Saturday 13th and 20th June, you’ll enjoy a 90 minute yoga class followed by a light lunch and a glass of prosecco (because it’s the weekend!)
Where: Carousel, 71 Blandford Street, W1U 8AB
What: A weekend brunch club for Fitzrovia foodies
Why: Popular spinning studio Psycle offer fun, fast-paced and music-fuelled fitness classes, which will push you to the max and leave you in a serious sweat. When The Handbook went along to try a weekend class, we left feeling fit, positive and pretty exhausted! Following a shower and spruce-up in Psycle’s luxe changing rooms – they have Malin & Goetz toiletries, Sure deodorant and GHD straighteners – we walked minutes down the road to Newman Street Tavern where we enjoyed their nutritious brunch menu, offering 2 courses for only £15. Dippy eggs and asparagus soldiers were a stand out, as well as the DIY juices. And we may have been tempted by their bottomless prosecco for £15 as well… we had just worked out!
Where: 48 Newman Street, London, W1T 1QQ
What: Cardio and frozen custard
Why: American burger joint Shake Shack are bringing their Shack Track & Field events to their Covent Garden site this summer. Teaming up with Good Vibes Fitness, they’re hosting a bi-weekly running club where you’ll venture along the river Thames via the London Eye and over Westminster Bridge before finishing at Shake Shack, where you can enjoy frozen custard and protein-filled burgers galore.
Where: 24 Martket Building, The Piazza, Covent Garden, WC2E 8RD
What: Rooftop yoga and healthy smoothies
Why: Soho House has one of the best rooftop terraces in London and it’s one of The Handbook’s go-to summer hangouts. They host regular roof deck yoga classes throughout the week, from early morning so you can go before work or around brunch time at the weekend so there’s no need to sacrifice the lie in. Influenced by rocket yoga, it’s a fast-paced start to get your heart rate going, but don’t worry – it ends with a well-deserved relaxation period and delicious smoothies afterwards.
Where: Soho House, 40 Greek Street, W1D 4EB
What: A foodie discount for fitness fans
Why: Again, the savvy team at FRAME are all over food and fitness combos. Their studio in Shoreditch have teamed up with several local restaurants and cafes to offer their members exclusive discounts and offers on a range of delicious foods: from ceviche at Andina to matcha lattes at Albion – they also hosted a weekend brunch club at Fish Market earlier in the year. If that’s not enough, they’ve even got some saver deals with nearby beauty brands so you really can have the full holiday makeover!
