Salmontini Review – What We Thought

16th July 2015

Ever since sushi first became an ‘it’ food all those years ago, I have loved Japanese cuisine, so I was really excited to try out Salmontini, which promises a modern, yet authentic take on Japanese dining. It is safe to say that I wasn’t disappointed!

We began the evening in the lounge area selecting from their bespoke Japanese inspired cocktails including the brilliantly named ‘Aladdin’s wish’ (ginger liquor, chambered and cranberry). I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I could easily work through the entire cocktail menu and it was great to see a tailored menu that offers something extra special, rather than just classic cocktail choices.

For starters, we enjoyed a selection of dishes. These included seaweed salad with large chunks of creamy avocado, apple, cucumber and currants in a sesame seed dressing. This dish was fresh and crunchy and went perfectly with the platter of sushi that we also enjoyed, along with a mixture of fillings. The platter was presented beautifully and was fresh and colourful. For mains, I had an Entrecôte St Germain steak with French fries. The steak came with an herb and mustard sauce which complimented it perfectly. The meat was well cooked and seasoned, however I do wish there were more meat options, rather than just the vast array of seafood dishes, as this one was a real standout.

Having saved some room for the best part of every meal, dessert, I was definitely left feeling like I could barely move by the rich and filling Chocolate Dome which encased a scoop of vanilla ice cream and was melted by warm pouring chocolate. This was sitting on the top of a crumbly biscuit base. It almost looked too good to eat…almost.

The service at Salmontini was fantastic. The staff were courteous and attentive, plus they had a clear knowledge of the menu and wine lists, sharing their personal recommendations. Although the restaurant is located in the sophisticated area of Belgravia, the atmosphere is relaxed and fun and this is a great venue for post-shopping cocktails in their chic bar, or catching up with friends over dinner. We would definitely recommend a portion of salmon and a martini at Salmontini (no idea if that’s where they got the name from, but it makes sense right?)
