Ask anyone if spending a night at a top London hotel and then driving around in a classic British car sounds like an ideal couple of days and we think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who would disagree. This is why we were super excited to review the Union Jag Experience at The Athenaeum Hotel & Apartments.

When we first arrived at the hotel, the staff were very helpful and cheerful – grumpy receptionists are never fun to deal with, so this was a pleasant surprise. The reception area was grand and opulent, yet still managed to feel very welcoming, which is an impressive feat. We were then shown to our room and I was impressed by how comfy the bed was (of course, lying down on it was the first thing I did). We were also lucky enough to secure a room with an amazing view of Green Park. The ensuite was spacious and the shower was powerful.

After freshening up, we headed down to dinner. Again, the staff were very attentive and pleasant. We tried the recommended cocktails before eating, including a gin and tonic and an after dusk sloe gin drink. For starters, I enjoyed Scollop with Amaretto Butternut & Peashoot starter, this was delicious and had lots of different flavours and textures. For mains, I had steak, which I felt was a bit over cooked, but the portion sizes are more than adequate. Finally, for dessert I had the Dark Chocolate Fondant. This was perfectly runny in the middle and served with fresh cream.

After our fill of food, we tried out the spa the next morning and it was a great start to the day – we enjoyed relaxing in the Jacuzzi and having a little go on the treadmill in the gym. For breakfast, we took advantage of the room service and it was served hot and right on time! Later on, we tried the Union Jag Car Experience. I didn’t get to drive the Jag, but was driven by a very nice driver around town for an hour, which was great. Our driver knew exactly where to go to show off just how much crowd pleasing the car gets. It was quite fun to have people taking photos of the car at every turn. The car itself is brilliant and has a touch of the James Bond about it…or maybe Austin Powers. The car was very comfy, but obviously powerful. It had a lovely cream and walnut interior, built in sat-nav, automatic with super sports mode to get a bit more noise. The car felt relatively new, so is clearly immaculately looked after. Overall, my stay at The Athenaeum and trial of The Union Jag Experience was great – riding around London in a jaguar is pretty much every guy’s dream, so this is definitely another thing ticked off the bucket list. The hotel was brilliant and the driving experience lots of fun…it was just hard reminding myself the next day that I am in fact, not 007.
