The Piano Works in Farringdon is the place for civilised live music and a late night – normally the two don’t mix so well but here they do, and not only that but an ensemble of two grand pianos, drums, guitar, horn and backing singers perform nothing but songs requested by the audience, all night long. A refreshing change from DJs who glare as you request Justin Bieber for the forth time. The actual venue is the basement of a Victorian warehouse in trendy Farringdon. This New Year’s Eve it will play host to music-loving partygoers, playing your requests non-stop for a full 13 hours – yep that’s correct, 5pm all the way through to 6am on New Year’s Day. After the customary glass of bubbles on arrival, we say try one of their famous ‘classically strange’ almond and hazelnut sours and dance the night (and year) away in your finest black tie gear.
Their website says ‘dance if you want to’ but on New Year’s Eve this won’t be optional, although we will allow the occasional break – 3 hours in you’ll still have 10 hours to go. Sustenance comes in the form of a 3-course meal at the start of the night. Pan fried scallops, ribeye steak and key lime pie with tequila sauce should set you up but don’t worry if you already have plans – they will welcome arrivals even after the clock strikes twelve.
