One thing Britain is truly Great at is pubs. You don’t have to walk far in any part of London before a George and the Dragon, Kings Head, Fox & Hounds… You get the picture. A new spot in London Fields is combining the pub with the humble corner shop and the outcome is Rio Boteco. Since it’s not a standard pub, the grub here consists of authentic Brazilian tapas and street food dishes like slow cooked ribs, salted cod fishcakes and Bolo de banana with cinnamon ice cream and, instead of a pint, (although craft beers are available – it is still a pub), seek refreshment from prosecco on tap and endless cachaça cocktails.
Located a couple of arches down from Climpson’s Arch (the restaurant that welcomes new talent for short-term residencies) the ‘cultural hub’ at The Institute of Light includes an art-house cinema, bookshop, vinyl record store and coffee shop, restaurant and bar, as well as a little courtyard garden. The best bit about it being a collaborative space? You can opt for cinedining and eat the best Brazilian food on your lap as you watch the big screen. Get excited for the Rio Olympics, Rio Boteco looks set to be a winner.
Rio Boteco at The Institute of Light, Hackney. Open Wednesday – Sunday until Sunday 28th August
