The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, a key date in London’s horticultural and social calendar, but have you ever wondered what happens to all the flowers after? Are they planted somewhere else? Or are they left to wither, each petal dropping off, one by one…a little flower graveyard? Well banish that thought because launching this weekend on the Jetty at Greenwich Peninsula is Farmopolis, a floating garden which has saved and rehomed tens of thousands of plants from the flower show.
Created by Secret Productions (the co-founders of Wilderness Festival) and Wayward (the UK’s leading art-design-farm practice), the new garden will host a year round programme of live music, supper clubs, literary salons, immersive theatre, creative workshops and talks and to celebrate the launch this weekend all the events will be free- ideal if you’ve spent all your money on last minute holidays and now need to tighten the purse strings.
Events include Literary Death Match, live music curated by Mahogany sessions, botanical jewellery classes, dream potion making, creative workshops in collaboration with Quodo, Biomodd and children’s shows by Arcola Theatre. The Farmopolis café will be serving up narrative driven and seasonal dishes and you’ll even be able to adopt one of the rescued plants from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, because remember a plant isn’t just for the show.
On Sunday, Disney’s Zootropolis will be taking over the jetty from 12pm – 5pm, the film will be screened twice during the afternoon and there’ll be face painting, animal performers, inspiring speakers and lots more! Children are encouraged to dress up in animal fancy dress too as there’ll be Disney prizes to win on the day! So that’s one day of the summer holidays sorted – only another 35 or so to go…
They’ve announced the full August line up of events which you can check out on the website but highlights include talks from the School of Life, playwriting and woodwork workshops, yoga classes, hula school and natural remedy classes!
So that’s your weekend sorted, that you’re conscious sorted (if you adopt a plant of course) and that’s another wonderful green space in London… nice one Farmopolis!
Farmopolis opens this weekend (30th-31st July 2016) with a series of free events, suggested donation £3 and is situated at the Jetty at Greenwich Peninsula.
