A rooftop may not necessarily be the first location of choice during the winter, but what if said rooftop had been transformed into an Alpine forest (and was covered by a roof)? Selfridges’ renowned rooftop restaurant has once again been transformed into a dazzling wintry forest; the forest’s walkway has been adorned with glitter balls and splashes of gold, getting shoppers and restaurant goers into the festive spirit… in case the Christmas decorations in Selfridge’s and lights on Oxford Street haven’t done that already.
Group Executive Chef for Des McDonald Restaurants, Lee Bull, has created the new winter menu with dishes celebrating true British ingredients as well as the best Scottish game. For breakfast, indulge in a chocolate toasted marshmallow and hazelnut waffle or if you’d rather save the indulgence the Christmas day itself, perhaps the classic crowd pleaser of avocado on toast with spiced pumpkin seeds and cress appeals more. The lunch and dinner menus include a whole variety of dishes such as braised ox cheek with grilled polenta and Highland venison fillet with bashed neeps and a sour cherry sauce. The festive season wouldn’t be so without feasting dishes – think whole suckling pigs with roasted apple and josper-grilled autumn vegetables, or perhaps Bannockburn beef Wellington (with all the trimmings, of course). Head Pastry Chef Siobhan Ambrose has a menu to wow dessert lovers, and even if you haven’t a sweet tooth, we’d advise saving a little room for Ambrose’s delectable desserts. If you can still move after all this, there’ll be a DJ bringing the party to life every weekend.
For those of you who really cannot resist an open air rooftop, even in the winter, there’s the terrace bar, furnished with cosy festive huts – perfect for you to sip your mulled wine in, though there’s also a whole array of wintry cocktails for you to try.
After a stressful day of Christmas shopping, we can think of worse things than hearty, warming food and mulled wine in an Alpine forest.
