No event is complete without delicious food and Chilli Bees delivers exactly that. Started by Ellie Short in 2008, Chilli Bees conjure up bespoke menus catering exactly to your needs. Not only this, but they’ll help with crockery, marquees and flowers so you can host your event stress free. We caught up with Ellie to talk all things catering.
We love your name! How did you choose it?
My mother Bumble, was a caterer so I kept to the bee theme and I love spicy food!
Who would be your dream guests to cater for?
Our ideal clients have a love for food that is similar to ours! We like to take home comforts and transform them into lavish banquets.
What is your top piece of advice for a successful event?
As cliché as it sounds, if you fail to prepare you need to prepare to fail. Always think ahead and think about every element of the event. If you do this, then even if something does go wrong (touch wood it doesn’t) you should be able to resolve/rectify the situation. For guests, our top tip is to relax and enjoy yourself, that is why you are hiring someone else to cater the event for you, so you can fully enjoy the party!
What’s the most outlandish request you’ve had?
Apart from bizarre menus from time to time we do not really have outlandish requests. Our clients are lovely and seek delicious menus and that is what we are best at.
Was there a moment when you knew you had made it?
No. We are always trying to move forward and so is the finishing line.
And what advice would you give to anyone wanting to go into catering?
Be prepared for unsociable hours and plenty of time on your feet. Listen to your clients and make ‘yes’ your first response. No two days are ever the same and you will be sure to meet some very interesting people and life long friends!
Just as there are food trends in restaurants do you see trends in catering?
Absolutely, as peoples’ lives are becoming busier and since we have very little time for ourselves, we are seeing a rise in home delivery meals to offices and for parties! This allows those who see themselves as domestic gods/goddesses to still keep up appearances and provide the ‘home cooked’ wow factor to their events and meetings!
What would your last supper be?
Without a doubt steak and chips – but proper french fries, none of those home cut hand cut chips! If l’Entrecôte could deliver their famous sauce to go with it then I’d be in heaven!
Between us, have you had any really difficult clients…no names of course!
Plenty….but it is normally because they are unsure of what they want and it is our job to guide them in the right direction.
What’s next for Chilli Bees?
Expansion, and a baby Chilli Bee…!
